Default Advice regarding line wts

Hi
Im fairly novice to fly fishing so not quite sure of the ins and outs yet but regarding line weights. Im currently fishing with a 7wt rod match with a 7wt line although this is poor quality and needs changing. Im looking at getting another rod and Im looking at a 10 ft 8wt. Therefore in my mind this should enable me to cast further or reach the same distances easier been a heavier line, is this right ?

thanks

Lee

Wrong conclusion am afraid Lee, a heavier rated rod won't allow you to cast further, only qualified instruction will help you with this.

Where do you normally fish? Small stillwaters, big stillwaters, rivers? A #8 weight set up is overkill in most instances.

Also, being a novice/improver, an #8 outfit can be quite a chore to get on with.

Tightlines!

None of the above is right.a well balanced system will cast better whatever the weight. A 5 # or 7# with balanced tackle will cast equally well.
An 8# will let you punch into wind a bit better, but it will not let you cast further.

Jim's talking about the OP Stew, not your post.

Not strictly true - ultimately the #7 will go further - in the right hands of course, check the record books. PP is correct when he says you're better off paying for casting instruction though.

Hi
well its mainly a smallish still water, but would like to try some of the scottish lochs at some point and also going to the carribean next october so it should get an outing there hopefully.
Where i do fish does get quite windy and this can sometimes be a problem. I already have a 6/7 wt rod with a 7wt line set up so I was looking for something different.

To be honest Lee, improving your technique through some instruction could well be a more beneficial long term investment than forking out on new kit.

Sorry,I don't agree, why is it that most of the standard line casting records are done with 5#. but I do agree about the casting lessons.
