Default Fry patterns

Coming to the end of my first year as a 'reborn' fly fisher and, until now, have fished exclusively dry flies as I find it far more exciting and satisfying.

BUT.......BUT..........BUT.................

Now the cold weather is here, my catches are dropping dramatically and, whilst still happy to catch one or two on the dry, I really want to try the 'fry patterns' that everbody seems to be catching with. The only problem is that I don't know what fry patterns are! I presume they are not 'lures'.

Can anybody give me some names/descriptions so that I can buy what I need as I don't find my local shop very helpful?

THANKS

Derek

I've had some success with these:

Epoxy Minnows

Although there are quite a few other fry patterns.

Default Fry Patterns

Stick to the following:-

Silver & White Hummungus (about 2-3")
Silver & White Hummungus Booby(about 2-3")
Minkie (about 2-3") White Or Light brown Mink
Minkie Booby 2-3" White Or Light brown Mink
Suspender Minkie

Any you'll never go far wrong on the English reservoirs

In my opinion these 3 are by far the best fry patterns.

Polystickle

Appetizer

Muddler Minnow

Sorry Steve but i disagree with you big time....

(with the exception of the appetizer)

These old style flies are outdated.....and not as effective as modern patterns.

The Poly Stickle has no movement at all....and while it does catch a few fish it'll never come close as a fish catching pattern when compared to a Hummungus or a Minkie

Muddler...again little movement and not as much disturbance as a booby.

These patterns will not induce a fish into the take as easily as the ones I mentioned...because of the lack of movement.

The appetizer i admit still is a cracking pattern and works very well...but it has movement in the form of a marabou wing, and the right combination of colours that makes the profile simular to that of a fry.

You will not go far wrong with a Cats Whisker, also a suspender minkie as Rob mentioned but i prefer to pull the foam off and fish with this, this then produces a brilliant fry pattern, ck

Thanks for the suggestions. I've now got the suggested flies and will try them this weekend.
If I fail.......it's your fault!
