Default Disused Canals -

Hi Folks,

Has anyone any experience of fly fishing on dis-used canals?

The Louth Canal created in the 1750's diverted pretty much the entire River Lud. Now disused with the gates removed along its length, the navigation is now pretty much reverted back to nature, bar the sills and unique barrel shaped locks along the way.

I walk the dog along a good 3 mile stretch with parts looking very much like the chalk stream its parallel neighbour would once have been.

Anyway the interest for us lot is that a number of the old locks contain beaucoup de trout and the stretches in-between have residents also patrolling about! The potential is for not conventional trout fishing by any means, 20 feet down in 2-4 feet of crystal clear water within a former lock system!

But the challenge does seem quite interesting!

I once heard that Canals are free to fish on, is this likely to be the same for Trout?
