Default Fly Fishing First Aid

Hi
What is the best way to deal with a hook in your hand, arm etc. as I just done it this morning in a rush to get out to work ran to find my phone and ouch, scream, blood and there's a hares ear in my hand.

Luckily it was barbless but got me thinking on what to do if a barbed hook gets into you, do you push it on through debarb and then remove, yank out and hope you get it out or exploratory surgery involving a knife.

Default A few factors have to be considered here ....

How big is the hook, and how deeply is it embedded are the two major factors. If just under the skin and a rather heavy barbed hook, I run them through, cut off the barb then back out.

With lighter wire hooks you can take a length of mono, place around the inside of the hook bend and pull straight back. A bit of a pain in the butt to do if you're alone, but with 'help' the hook usually pops right out.

Don't forget to assure your tetness (sp?) shot is up to date!

fae

Edit: Last time I did this it was a heavy wire hook and really stuck in my sorry butt ... unloading rods out of the back of my Jeep afer dark ... and a OH SHXT!. Used a lighter to burn off the leader, tried the shove through and it was a 'no way Jose.' Off to the emergency room at Ashland General Hospital. (Must have been a slow night?) TWO Doctors fussy with me, pull out more shxt than I've seen in combat ... and ... and ... now what? Did a mental 'Sweet Jesus' and pulled out the wire cutters still in my pocket and told one of the fellows to grab the fly about at the eye, ram it through, cut it off and I'm out of here (well, did have to update my Tetness shot).

Asked one of the fellows where/if he'd learned how to do this? Answer: 'A minor classic;' "I read how to do it in a fishing magazine."

Cost of this bit of BS? (Thank God for good insurance!!!) SIX HUNDRED DOLLARS!!

I have done it a few times and if i have a friend at hand i have found that the trick of passing the mono through onto the bend of the hook, gritting your teeth, and getting them to yank straight back works well.

Not been unlucky enough to have doen it whilst on my own but can see this method would be very tricky then.

Pull the hook out by using a strong cord (nylon or flyline) though the bend of the hook; at the same time press the hook eye into your skin. They usually come out without a problem. Apply some whisky, give a good suck on the small wound and spit out.

Edit; seen the next post - drink the whisky, suck the wound then spit out!

the cord idea works on all sizes of hooks, not just light wired ones, even BIG sea hooks wil come out that way, although more attention to where the barb is and what it might potentially damage coming out is advisable, just this wek I got a vid in an email from a friend showing a sea hook being with this method not pretty to watch but effective. here's the actual vid on youtube, BIG treble

Must have missed that part at first-aid classes(thanks for the update-"hic")I always have forceps, so clamp on to the bend of the hook and pull. After the rain-dance and profanities, do what oldbull says-hic. Peter.
(I`ve been reliably informed, the more whisky taken "for medicinal purposes", the less pain you feel).

Take note of OB's advice. Press down on the eye of the hook with the thumb nail of one hand, and pull on the nylon with the other hand. I once took a salmon fly size 6 double out of a friend's bald head. I said I'd yank the hook out on the count of four; I pulled on two!! Geoff said it was no worse than pulling out hair from the eyebrow with tweezers.
Pressing the eye of the hook into the flesh of 'the victim' cocks the butt of the fly up in the air; that puts it in the attitude of its entry, so it should do the least possible damage on the way out.
Have taken two other (trout) fly hooks out, one was stuck in my finger, and no problems there. NB I don't think I would try using forceps; you are far more likely to put the hook in the right position if you pass your strand of strong nylon round it and let it find the right place for the pull; and you are far more likely to get a straight pull. Just my opinion. TC

Wink

It is a lot less painful / messy if you use barbless hooks - they only hurt going in !!!!!!!!!!!
