Default River Kent Cumbria

Hi all, is there anyone out there that has fished the River Kent for Sea Trout or Brown Trout in recent seasons. If so, how's it been fishing? I know it fishes ok for Salmon when there's water, but not heard too much about the trouting.
Thanks David

Hi David,

I enjoyed fishing it this season. Plenty of sport of an evening.

Thanks marksnsparks, i was beginning to think no one fished the kent. I used to fish it for salmon a few years back. Now i've got back into trouting i thought i would put my name on the waiting list as its quite close to where i live. Where abouts did you go above or below town? thanks David

Most people fishing the river August through to the end of October. It's a late season river for the Salmon. There are plenty of spots to try for some sea trout both above and below town. A traditional wet fly works well, down and round. The river is healthy with plenty of hertling and salmon par in the river. There's some good brown trout too. It's well worth exploring. Even if you don't catch the scenery is great.

Default River Kent Cumbria

Hi David

As has ben mentioned the vast majority of fishing action is for the Sea Tout and Salmon but there are some nice brownies to be had particularly in the higher reaches from kendal upstream.

I have fished the water on a regular basis for over 40 years and there has been a definite decline in Trout numbers and in recent years the numbe rof parr and smolts. This I suspect is directly related to the vast numbers of Gooseanders that are now redident throughout the river but Particlarly from Kentmere down to just below kendal. its a horrendous sight in May when the smolts are dropping down to see a dozen or more Gooseanders working the pols and coming up with numerous smolts.

If its fly fishing for Brown trout that you want then these days I would highly recommend the waters controlled by Burneside Anglers. The waters are very lightly fished and they do stock reasonably well with some very nice fish to over 2lbs plus.

Every year in the Kendal town waterthere are several huge Tout to be seen and these will be from the stocking of the main lake at Kentmere. For fly as has been mentioned as teamof wet flies such as partridge & orange, snipe and purple and greenwells spiders will always produce. Gold head GRHEs and pheasnt tail nymphs are good fished either conventionally or Polish or Czech style. My biggest Brown Trout at about 5lbs came on a shocking pink bead chain eyed lure so don`t be afraid to try a lure with an intermediate line.

For Salmon the Kent Angling water is probably still best overall but for Trout get purself a Burneside permit for cracking fishing.

Good luck

Bob

Thanks Bob, very helpful info. I have my name on the waiting list for kent angling, so hopefully get on soon. I used to fish Burneside years ago mainly for salmon at back end. I will have a look into joining them, you used to be able to get tickets from the jolly anglers.
David.
