Hello,
There are two kinds of silica products which are useful for dry flies fishing:
1) Fine powder silica gel to dry the flies after they become soggy (the E-Bay product seems to be such a product). The powder absorb water from the fly and it can be regenerated in an oven or in a microwave.
2) Hydrophobic powder (which repel water) applied on the dry fly with a brush. The powder is very, very light and has a tendency to get away from the fly when casting, you have to get the powder inside the dubbing or the CDC to be effective. More information on both powders at:cul de canard, schage des mouches seches en cul de canard pour pche de la truite

Sack the stuff on eBay. Track john Tyzack down and speak to him. He sells an equivalent in bulk for a fraction of the price of frogs fanny. He'll even supply it with a brush applicator these days.

Hope this helps.
