Default flies are costing me a fortune!!!

heya
I started trout fishing a few months ago and have found out it is costing me a fortune! As a seasoned coarse fisherman but a beginner at trout fishing I have been sticking to what i know and fishing with a lure suspended underneath a bung. As per coarse fishing I have been feeding "little and often" by throwing 3/4 flies around my bung every ten minutes or so. As you can probably work out over the course of a day I am using up to 100 flies. I know i found a good deal on ebay for a job lot of 500 flies but at this rate I will need to be spending about £20 on "bait" every time i go fishing on top of the ticket price! Is this normal????? Also I have noticed that when i throw flies in some of them just float away on the surface and away from where I am fishing, now for the life of me I cannot see how this is going to attract the fish to where I am fishing, surely it will take them further away or maybe is it so trout further away will follow the trail of flies and find my suspended lure???? Please help i am getting SO confused, frustrated and SKINT!!!!!!!!!!!1

I know its hard at the start but keep at it.

I find it easier to wait untill you see the rise then throw your flies at the rise, hopefully to hit him in the eye or another method I seen guys using on Sheelin, is to hold the fly line and throw the fly rod like a spear at the fish and hopefully you will get him.

If that fails place your net into the water and bait it with a few flies, go for tea and hopefully the fish will swim into it. The traditional chalk stream guys dont like this method. But if it catches for you.

Default Some hints

Perhaps you should consider fishing from the bank onto which the wind is blowing. This will allow you to collect up and re-use any floating flies that you have been loose feeding.

Another tip that I can pass on is to take a few 'magnetic' flies with you. Make sure they sink well. At the end of the day just do a few casts in the area you have been fishing, making sure your Magnet Fly is grubbing the bottom and you are doing a slow Fig 8 retrieve. That way you can recover lots of your loose offerings for the next session.

Other than that it's the price you have to pay for being a fly fisherman. At least you are a lot cleaner at the end of the day not having to handle messy maggots, groundbait and the like.

Keep at it and, like other members here, you'll soon be catching over a 100 trout in a session (I hope you have more than one keepnet).

All the best.

Hi Lee,

What type of bung are you using. And are you using florocarbon, copolymer or nylon and I think you will find that if you degrease your flies before chucking them around your bung it will help.

I think that if you address these areas, then perhaps your success rate will increase.
