Default New slant on old threads WHEN IS FLY FISHING NOT FLY FISHING

Picture this:- Very high river, clear, slowly dropping, salmon showing in various lies, very big fish showing off far bank, wade in lenthen line, cant reach with best casts, always 5 or 6 yards short of lie. I hate spinning, but seems best way to cover fish, as i am setting up spinner get brainwave from somewhere!, bouncing betty, 4 foot leader tie on 2.5" yellow and black waddington, try practise cast couple of yards upstream of fish, seems to work ok, move couple of paces downstream and cover fish, line tightens and wow! results in picture below

20lbs of spanking fresh nith salmon, what a triumph, not because of size, but because of parallel thinking, and subsequent method of capture.
Caught on fly but cast on spinner! fly fishing or not?
answers on a postcard please!
regards
bert

was on fly, check out keeper ring on rod.
is a well practised method of catching big sea trout in norwegian rivers in spring, when water is high, and traditional fly fishing wont hold fly in lies, hence my thoughts in the post!

bert.

What a Bar of silver , well done!
well if it was caught on a fly and hooked in the mouth i would call it fly fishing with a different rod and reel but who cares atleast you got what you were after without using bait or foul hooking it.

I'll take a bash at this! Deary me!?!?!..
How about, 'it must be caught on a fly made with at least 3 turns of thread( I seem to recall this from somewhere), this classes an almost bare hook, sparse, as a fly, whilst excluding totally bare, specifically bare coloured hooks. And it must be cast out using a silk line or modern equivalent. It should also be cast out in a manner that envolves 2 or more repeated 'cast's of the line in order to deliver the fly. This also refers to spey & roll type casts & double hauling etc, as those involve more than 2 turns of the rod to perform the casts!...????

I'll have to have a wee look at the Ballifs book in the morning!..

whole point of the question!
fish was def caught on fly, but not on fly rod! i wasnt fly casting, but i was def fishing the fly, indeed it was probably fishing better than on fly line!

Is it flyfishing? Who cares?

It may niggle at you for the rest of your days, but you caught the fish by using your head and your new pal Betty

Well done.
