Default Rod Breaks

Hi was throwing some old junk out today and was taking the top section of a 3 piece spining rod, which I have lost the other 2 bits, to the dump along with other junk when I got it in the car and closed, I heard this almighty crack. Opened the door up and the spining rod tip was shattered all over the drive and seat.

Scared the sh1t out of me thinking that could have been one of my beloved fly rods.

So what wanted to find out from you's was what is the most common way to break a rod so I can avoid it. Any funny stories are welcome and would lighten up my day.

Fishing a small reservoir with a friend, rain starts, and i mean rain, within minutes 4" of water in bottom of boat, we decide to row for jetty and shelter of bothy, i am on oars set of like an olympic oarsman for jetty, coming to jetty ship oars and get ready to land. going too fast boat skelps side of jetty both me and mate knocked flat on our backs, killing ourselves laughing till i look down, i have landed flat on top of my spare rod, 4 piece 9' #6, not in tube, now is 8 piece!. wasnt dear rod, and i still smile about it today.

Hi there,
I got a brand new Flyrod at my last birthday.... and to show my pals how really good the action is I put the rod together ( we are in the living room....) and whipped with the rod and there was 'lovely' cracking sound! Silence, then laughter, I had broken the brand new Rodtip by hitting the furniture in the back of me, so that was it with new Rod.

its a good idea to get them all out here then try not to do them....

hitting the rod with a weighted nymph is easy, pulling line out through the tip ring and holding the rod about one ring down bending the tip too far, car doors are the classic.

I got my hand in the car door one time and broke my middle and third fingers so I know to avoid doors but I didn't realise the weighted nymph could do any damage.

hook penetration is the nasty bit, if it goes in far enough to cut the carbon fibres you get a tiny weak spot,

your post reminds me of a baby in the supermarket car park, strapped into a baby chair..her mother slammed the door trapping her hand in it

went coarse fishing with my brother last year.
As i was packing up i cast the rod with no line or reel (tbh was practsing my spey casting action) and snapped it.
Dad came to pick us up then as i went to shut the boot i heard this snapping sound. I openedthe boot and found out i had broken a different section of the rod

o well at least it was a cheap match rod.

Ive crunched a rod in a car door before it's not a good moment.

The only other rod I have ever broken was a coarse rod, night fishing a river and hadnt noticed the ine was wrapped round the ip before I recast. I noticed very soon afterward with the quivertip sliding down the line after the rig.
