Default Rig Storage

Hi,

When your down on the river I understand that changing tactics is a must and I will be changing from Drys to droppers, ect , depending on the time of day, weather and river conditions.

Do you use rigs you've already made up at home or do you make things up on the riverbank ? If you do pre-make them , what do you carry them in ?

I just hate wasting valuable river time tying knots and faffing about

Cheers.

generally i will make them up bankside ,but if you want to store them try putting them on pole winders for coarse fishing buddy with some elastic anchors or just slip then end down the side with an elastic band around the winder ... or get the cicular tippet holders ..

Orvis produce a plastic box that holds four or five 'pole winders'. I use it in the winter for grayling fishing on the basis that warm fingers at home tie better knots than frozen ones bankside.

Tronix rig winders. 65mm dia EVA foam. Available from various places including ebay in a choice of colours for around £2.80 for 10. I think they were originally aimed at sea anglers, so may be a bit bulky if you want to carry more than a few.

Hi TT,

I don't bother with any holders and just keep them in a partitioned, see through wallet after winding them around my fingers (carefully - same way as they come when you buy them I suppose). Usually drop a label in too to remind of the make up of the leader as my memory never proves to be as good as I expect. It saves space in my waistcoat for more important things like emergency baccy and rizlas, wee flask and a flapjack!

I too like to tie them at home so I do not waste my precious fishing time and chop and change on the water as necessary.

Andy

Excellent ideas, thanks folks.

Might go for the Orvis box, I need to carry more stuff because I have a shiney new Fishpond vest and I'm only planning to use 3 of the 500 pockets available, and one of those three is for a snickers bar.

Just get a short length of foam pipe insulation and wind your casts around it, you can hook your flys into it to avoid tangles - cheap as chips mate.

I use bits of roughly circular cardboard that has three "tongues" projecting from the outer rim, a slit at the outer rim, and a hole in the centre - would be so much easier if I knew how to post a diagram. Anyway, the point fly is stuck into the edge of the centre hole, then you just wind your leader round the outside, in and out of the three tongues so the leader forms a triangular shape and has something to stop it just falling off the sides. Each dropper fly can be tied on in advance and because its made of cardboard, not plastic, the dropper flies can be stuck into the cardboard too under enough tension to stop them coming off. When you've finished winding, the end of the leader (the end without the point fly on it!) just slips into the slit by the rim and friction keeps it there and stops the whole thing unravelling.

I shy away from the plastic versions of this because the droppers are never quite the right length to keep them in the available holes.

I find this is better than simply carefully winding up the leader and storing it in a plastic wallet since, even then, I always get it tangled when I try and unravel it. Also means I have the flies pre-tied onto the leader/droppers.

The only downside is the leader gets a little kinked, but nothing a gentle stretch doesn't solve.
