Default Mussel shell fly box

Here is a fly box I have made for my partner.

I made it to look like a mussel shell.
I am in the process of making a second one for her with a faux tortoise shell design.

Does anyone else make there own fly boxes.

Any tips advice welcome.

All us Welshies should buy one then when we get bored, have a game of river rugby up and down the Taff with your fly box

Hi Anjinsan,

That looks lovely and although my partner is only starting into fishing I reckon she would be delighted if I handed her your mussel shell fly box (especially if I had taken the time and trouble to make it).

Never made my own, other than a pencil case with glued in foam as a teen, and probably never will make one to to your standard. So no tips or advice, I am afraid but it does rather look like you should be giving us a bit of advice and pointers. What is it made from?

Good 'un,

Andy

Love it. Looks so comfy to hold and would be a pleasure to fill with just those flies selected for that day - not ALL the flies and ALL the fly boxes that I lug around (and which make my eyeballs spin when trying to make a choice).

Whether it would become just one more fly box to cart around is another matter! Great idea for someone who can make decisions though...

Thumbs up

Crafty

Looks like something with a bit of mysticism about it - could be used to conjure up dreams of fantastical adventures, I'd make it a family heirloom and aim to pack it's history with loads of true and half true stories - my kids would love a bit of that !

Good 'un,

Andy
Some kind words there many thanks lady and gentlemen.

To answer your question Andy the box is made from an offcut of some hardwood,I had kicking about.

I basicly took two pieces about 20mm thick, used a chisel to cut out the middle where the flies go.

Then I roughed out the shape with a pen knife, then rounded it off with some sandpaper.

Then popped on a hinge.

I made it whilst sat in my van having a crafty smoke,

The coating which isn't quite finished yet is a shellac based laquer which I make my self.Similar to Japanese lacquer or a french polish.

I use shellac as this is whats called a convertable coating (basicly each coat wets up the previous,so maintenance will be easier later on.

Later on i will put a licquid wax coating over it and buff this up to a high gloss shine.

I'm glad you took an interest Andy and that your partner has taken an interest in fishing also.

If you are interested in doing something like this for your partner I would gladly send you a box hinged and primed, that you can finish your self.
Free of course
Send me a p.m and will give you my phone number as I speak better than I write.

Regards

Sean

Cheeky,

That's practically Shakespeare for a man who was born in the wagon of a travelling show.

Just you wait till I have finished my learn direct course.

I've just dropped off some trout fishing mags at yours.( much more of this and I shall ask for them back).

Sean
