Default Some Thing You Don't See Every Day

Hi All.

Well in Wales it's gale force winds and very high rivers, just the sort of day you want to give a casting demo with a 60 year old split cane rod, I was asked to have some picture's of me taken casting with cane for a new book by Sir Johnny Scott,(In the gale force winds, not fun) on different country pursuits, another gentleman was asked to show punt gunning, well I have never seen it in real life, what a gun and he said this was the small one I would of liked to hear it being shot, would of been quite a bang.

wow can you imagine the recoil! You would find yourself 50 yards downstream after that mother goes off.

Look at the size of the ropes holding it down, the recoil sends the boat backwards.

And that's just a small one ! There's a pub called The Stork in Conder Green near Lancaster which has one on display - it looks like a cannon.

The objective was apparently to aim at a flock, and take anything up to 80 ducks with a single shot from the big gun. A seriously different sport...

I saw a programe about one when I was a kid, the guy spent ages loading just about every bit of scrap iron that he could fit down there. Like a Blunderbuss, but unforunately totaly indesciminate( i can imagine the odd bittern water Rail and reed bunting got it too) . However in the programe the chap carefully paddled across the fen to where the ducks where, but they all took off before he could fire...Quality television!
