I have only been fishing for 2 seasons for wild brownies but March is always a slow month for me. I suppose it really depends when the fish actually spawn though.

Come the 15th of March I will still be out giving it a cast.

I think March is to early, Ruthven opens on 1st of April but I dont usually have a go until mid April. St Johns opens first Sat in April but Watten, Craigie etc dont open til 1st May.

The Don trout are in tip top condition in April when the season opens.
Here is one I got on April the 1st this year.

Any lowland waters should be fine with the early start depending on how open the winter was, say the Borders to the Central belt and some of the low level lochs on the West coast up to Fort William.

Lochs above a thousand feet to two thousand I wouldn't expect the trout to be in condition till the beginning to the end of April, especially in the East as it can be colder.

Any lochs above two thousand feet and above the highland line I wouldn't expect to be in good condition until the beginning to the middle of May. There would be exceptions especially low level lochs on the west coast that might be earlier depending on the winter.

The 15th is too early , The 1st April probably a better date to open for wild brown's.

However it would only add to the winter blues

The 15th march is early, but I have seen some great fly hatches and rises on the Tay in late march. Personally I think 1st April is a better date.

Do not see any reason to change it. Most Lowland Tout are in reasonable condition by then & all or most are over the rigors of spawning. If you have any issues with it fish the puddles for Rainbows

nice one Highlander. Some of the fair weather lazy fishers are better sticking to where they can park a car 20ft from the water and stand on a platform without moving allday hoping to hit a shoal of Rainbow fish.
