Thumbs up Old Beginner

Hi-de-hi. First time on here so please be patient. I am 68years old and retired.
A few weeks ago while visiting my daughter in Hampshire my son in law took
me fishing at the local trout lakes.I did catch one blue at 2ib 8oz but in the main
hooked mostly thistles.clumps of grass and umpteen patches of reeds.Despite
this I had a great day and wished I had been going fly fishing for the past 40
years.

I have now bought some gear and after some casting practice am confident of
hitting the water. Living on the North East coast and within easy reach of Northumbria Water fisheries I am hoping to get at least one days fishing before the season ends on 30 November.probably at Grassholme in Teesdale.

I have been reading with interest the comments on these forums regarding
the pitfalls of cheap line. My current problem is understanding what appear
to be endless lists of flies. Is there any easy means of deciding what is a dry
fly?,what is a wet fly and which ones are nymphs.

Any way enough from me.Cheers.

Welcome to the forum.

As for your question re: flies Have a look at the Fly Tying Step by step section on this forums. they are classified by type dry, wet, lure etc and should help you no end in starting to learn the patterns.

Hi wickerman,
regarding grassholme res. as ya probally know grassholme is a
mixed bait fishery, not been up there for a few years but usually found the fish deep probally feeding on the bait that goes in,hurry res. is 5-10 mins up
the road and is fly only( might be worth looking into)
Flies that work well up there are.....

kate mclaren
bibio
soldier palmer,etc (wet flys)

and lures ......dawsons olive
black fritz
orange fritz

hope this helps and good luck
