Default Farmoor Temporary Closure

Thames Water has issued the following statement:

‘Following the recent discovery of a number of dead fish in the River Thames near to Farmoor Reservoir in Oxford, Thames Water has ceased abstraction from the river into the reservoir.

As a further precaution we have stopped all leisure activities on the reservoir until further notice.

We would like to reassure customers that this occurrence poses no threat to drinking water supplies.’

Hopefully we'll be open very soon, for more info call the Rangers on 07747 6407047.

Anybody have any information about this fish kill??

Cheers

Andy

Something (not much) here:-

Obviously no info on how far up the Thames catchment this started but very worrying and hard on the heels of the Trent incident.

Sorry to bump this thread but as this seems on the face of it to be a potentially very large fish kill does anybody have any more info?

Farmoor has re-opened as of today...

Farmoor - Farmoor Re-Opens Monday 16th November

Having googled various combinations around "Thames", "Farmoor" and "fish kill", I didn't find a lot more information than what's in Andy's first post...

Did they loose any fish in the reservoir ?

If so did they re-stock this late in the season ?

Anyone got any news ?

This story has made me think about the points raised in Jeff's post...

Fly fishermen - selfish and introspective?

10,000 dead fish, if there was any mention of trout (and I bet you there will be some among the casualties) would this story generate more interest here?
This is not intended as any sort of snipe or trawl BTW...

Sorry for the delay in reply chaps, I've been off for a few days.

The fish deaths were not in the reservoir but in the intake channel. The fish that died were this year's perch and ruffe. Any potential pollution incident was 'minor' and absolutley no trout were lost.

Rob - we continue to stock every week throughout the year.

Anyway, the res reopened for fishing on Monday, the closure was a precaution until the cause of the fish deaths was determined.

Thanks Damian. This does rather beg the question what caused the fish deaths, specially as it seems to have been limited to only young perch and ruffe ?

Sorry, but how can an incident that killed 10,000 be described as minor?

Andy,

It certainly wasn't 10,000 fish. They were all fry. It is 'minor' in terms of Farmoor as a trout fishery as the trout stocks were not affected and the fish kill wasn't even in the reservoir.
