Do you mean PDF, not DVD?

Either way, it's a proper bit of bound paper every time for me. Some things, like software manuals, for example, work OK as PDFs, but I've never been able to read more than a few pages at a time.

FWIW, I've just been asked to produce my first ebook, which has been an interesting experience so far. The biggest snag at the moment is that I don't actually an ebook reader to test it out on!

I would not buy a book if it was only available on DVD.

How the heck does a book on DVD work? You sit there and read it on a tv screen? Never heard of that one, that be my vote for worst possible choice.

I like books. As in like the ones with words on paper between two covers. In this day/age you have to consider the Sony reader and Amazon's Kindle, but together these make up a tiny percentage of books actually sold.

I agree entirely.

A book is a thing of permanence. As soon as it's published it's a moment in time. Other forms of media are transient by comparison - not to deny their convenience, portablility etc - but a book is special on many levels. You can pick it up, flick through it, look at the pictures - and there's nothing to compare with the smell of a new book ... except perhaps the smell of an old book! Whenever I buy a new book I always write my name and the date in it, don't quite know why ... books, I love 'em!

I work on a computer all day. I would hate to have to read on screen as well!
I actually do work in publishing - designing jackets for printed books mainly.
I do create e-books for clients as well. E-books are popular with people who are always on the move; commuters, nomads... blackberry users for instance. A pdf e-book that can be dipped into - on a train commute etc. They're not designed for 'home use' really I feel.
If a small publisher doesn't want a high print run, they could use Print on Demand publishing (POD). Internal quality is just as good as a conventionally mass printed book. The cover does suffer from poor digital printing sometimes, but it's a solution for those who don't want a garage full of books, or an alternative to other self publishing options.
