Spider is on a distinguished road
Default Seasons lessons and observations

Might be better to put this here ......mods feel free to delete the other one in Grayling section......

I've river fished for 2 seasons now and consider myself a fast improver, with no blanks this season

I learned a lot from this forum over the season and thought I'd chip in with my own observations - just my opinions at the end of the day...

1. Loon Aquel floatant is rubbish - creates a slick around dry flies more than most i have tried.
2.Loon Snake River mud is rubbish at sinking tioppets. Really bad. So is Quick Sink Mucilin.
3. However Fulling Mill is excellent and made a big difference to my success rate. Use is and keep applying it!
4. Fly refused most often ( late decision to abandon the take ) = Klinks
5. Bronze hooks have higher success rate on dries than silver ones.
6. If fishing smallish rivers with lots of bankside growth, you simply HAVE to use the Griffiths Gnat. There is nothing better - an amazing fly that transformed my season. The smaller the better - i fround size 14 prettu useless for example. I will tie loads now that winter is here.
7. Dont overhackle your Griffiths - they work far better in the surface where trout just kiss them off unsuspectingly. 6 turns of hackle on a size 16 hook worked well for me.
8. I tie a type of nymph used in the Hends book ( brill book , excellent nymph - probably better for me than Hares Ear or PTN ) .....when i have fished down the run, it can be fished back as a mini streamer. Resulted in my best days fishing this season.
9. Ron Dibble Furled leaders really helped with my dry fly presentation - try them.
10. It pays to use really thin Coplymer on dries - i now use 2 and 3 lb and would go lighter if it doesnt effect turnover.

Hope these snippets help the novices out there .

Very good, now it will be very interesting to see a similar synopsis at the end of next season. You shoulk try and keep a diary mate.
BUT don't forget them spiders, they will out fish them all I suspect.
