Default world cup on mask

Does anyone think this competition should be stopped, because of all the trout that are killed for the sake of a competition....

There is two arguments here it think, firstly I can understand the point in rural ireland where businesses need this competition to survive in the current climate and it brings huge revenue to the area.

secondly;I think they should come up with an idea of catch and release for it..lets face it a lot of fish are killed in the hope that they will qualify for the final and then to find out that the average has gone up and a trout of say 1lb-1.5lb doesn't qualify you to the final...there is loads of fish either dumped that shouldn't needed of be had it been for maybe a photograph with a rule and a coloured sheet with the fish on it...or something.something has to be done.Don't think mask fished all that well for the last couple of years...

whats your thoughts

paul

I dont think it should be stopped. As I said in another thread we need to be so
careful about wanting to ban and stop everything. It can go way to far. There is
to much of that going on these days.
I think to many fish were killed in the past in the world cup but I live in the area
and as I said before there is no angling pressure on the lake from one end of the year
to the other. Its 5 or 6 days in 7 or 8 months. And if the fish are lucky enough it can
be a scorcher for most of it.
It should be very easy run the thing on c an r especially when there are boatmen for
the comp.
Why not take a vote with all the anglers that took part last year.Simple.catch and release Yes or no.Tick the box!!!Then we see who cares about our great western lakes!!

Have to agree with you lads C+R is the only way to go. Look at '09 winner who caught his limit and returned the rest. For us lads travelling up for the weekend from the south, the last thing we want to do is to head back to the pub/b+b with fish that nobody wants.

If you look at golfers, they mark their card and they get a result. Why can't anglers be trusted to do the same.

On another topic I CAN'T see why this competition could not be used as part of a qualifying process for Irish anglers wanting to fish or represent the National team.

This trophy fishing sounds ridiculous to me. Could a small tank not be kept on board each boat which could be weighed in at intervals during the day. Any fish not returned alive is discounted from the results!

At the moment it sounds to me that if half the anglers that go in these comps had a chance to nail a fish with an oar they would all for the sake of a prize!

Catch photograph and release,is one way

have boat marshals on the lake , to weigh and witness fish, is another,

purpose built fish tanks as boyne said is another, whereby you weigh in your fish every hour at a set point or await a marshal to reach you.

Mind sound stupid but at least ideas are been put forward which means people are thinking about it anyways

Not sure if the tank thing would work. Its the most simple thing in the world to
run comps on a c an r basis.
Measure fish in a pipe cut in half thats half filled with water. Not inches but cm
on the pipe. Then you get points for whatever length the fish is.Its being done
in more and more comps.
The world cup should be the easiest one to run that way because you have a
boatman AND an angler compeating against you.No messing. Its easy.
But as I said before.I personally dont like the idea of getting totally obsessed
with catch and release. There is no need for it.I release 40-60% of fish I catch.
The lakes are so so under fished now and I dont believe its bad fishing.
People are changing.Attitudes are changing.
I can go out at Duckfly time an catch 6 or 8 fish.Go out In olives and catch 4 in
a day.Go out during may and god knows how many fish you could catch.AND go out
at night and see 40 fish rise around you in a small bay.June July aug and sept in a
big wave and rise over 20 fish in the day or more!!!I was catching fish in sept on
dries in a big wave for christ sake. Now thats not bad fishing I would think.
So all this doom and gloom for the western lakes and we must release every single
fish to save it does not go down with me.
The whole thing is changing. Its nearly impossibe to get 2 good days wit good conditions
any more. Its either P issing rain.Lake is too high.It blowing a gale. Its so bloody cold
sometimes in june july etc
If I was a trout in Corrib I would be a happy one because as far as I can see most of them dont see a bait or a fly for 8 months of the year!!!

The tank idea is not feasable,How big a tank would you need in a boat to keep for example a 5lb fish alive and ''Well''
C&R is the way to go
