Welcome to the forums, plenty of people on here willing to help a newcomer.

Arnfield in Tintwistle, Derbyshire is not far from you. A cracking place to fish, though I'm sure there are places closer.

As for the canal, well you might if you target the right fish with the right fly. Pike fishing with a fly can be very exciting.

It's not an instant solution, but get yourself to this talk in Feb-2010 and you should learn all about fishing your canal with a fly-rod.

Been there done that, I used to live in Salford and there is plenty of water and trout fisheries for you to go at, PM me and I will help you as much as I can mate, although it is the traditional end of the fly fishing season so you may struggle through the winter months, but I can put you onto some great Grayling fishing

thx for the replys guys .I got some fly tackle this morning and headed down to the river Irwell , next to clifton.Did'nt catch anything and losed nearly all me flys lol.

DvD's and Books make casting looking easy lol.I ended up leaving flys off for abit to get head around casting.

I going to try again on friday . Anyone no a good spot on the Irwell i can fly fish on the bank from ? (Somewhere nice and flat without any trees)

have a look on multimap to find somehwere clear to fish on the Irwell, you can switch from arial to os map which is really handy for finding access.

Catching pike on the fly is exhilarating and can be done on any lures really. Stay clear of the huge flies ones until you know what your doing, you could cause some serious damage to yourself!

Trout seasons over now but theres a few places you can fish for grayling now, the goyt at Brabyns park is meant to be alright. When the trout are in season both the Ribble and Dee are within an hours drive.

I'm pretty new to it myself so if you find any good spots then let me know.

also, its definitely worth spending time practicing without flies, just tie a piece of wool in. It'd be worth spending a few quid on a lesson or 2 before you teach yourself loads of bad habits like i did

This weekend (as long as the monsoon passes) I will be fishing a nice spot on the Irwell between Bury and Radcliffe. I am looking for an elusive chub......

If you fancy a chuck send me a PM and we can meet up.

I am a bit of a beginner myself but am able to hit the water more often than not.

by the way if you catch and I dont there will be trouble.........
