Default Large Irish Rainbow Fishery

Hi Guys
One to knock around for a bit. What will it take to get a large rainbow fishery in Ireland. Now I mean 1000 arce plus lough not a small little water. I know some of you will say why would you want a big rainbow water in Ireland with all those great wild trout about but I honestly think we really need one here.
The demand for fishing in Ireland is great and as most people know the wild loughs have taken a bit of a hammering over the last few years. Anglers want to take fish and wild stocks find it hard to recover from over fishing so a good rainbow water would take alot of pressure of the wild fish population.
Each year I hear anglers say oh if only we had a Rutland, Grafaham etc over here. Well surely there is some one with the know how to open one of these great big rainbow fisheries over here. I know Lough Lene in Westmeath is a good fishery but surely if the club that runs it could see the great fishing that is to be had on UK midland reservoirs then a change in their stocking policy would make that venue one of the best in Europe. Lough Owel has been mentioned here as a rainbow venue but I doubt that will ever happen.
It would be nice to see one here and maybe one day we will but in the mean time I would love to hear your thoughts on this one.

I agree with what your saying Andrew as regards the choice of large venues is pathetic to say the least, we only have one large water venue Lough Lene with rainbows,i have fished various reservoirs up and down the uk Grafham,Rutland,Chew and Meinteith to name a few are fantastic fisheries with great quality fish. But i believe Lough Lene is better than any reservoir i have fished and the fishing was unbelievable on it this year, ive had numerous 15plus bags on it on all variety of methods, from march through to september it fished its rocks off and towards the back end the fish were averaging 3lb The growth rate is phenomenal due the feeding. My main gripe is that the association should have all their qualifiers on Lene when they are picking teams to travel abroad for the simple fact that it is the only Large rainbow fishery in Ireland.Lough Owel would be ideal also due to the abundance of feeding and its size ie.3000 acres, but that seems a white elephant since rainbows were due to be in it ten years ago and the world and its mother were objecting to them

Andrew ,lough owel would be ideal in fact as any other venues i can think of have inflowing/outflowing rivers which is a disaster i believe where rainbows are concerned as they tend to runs the rivers soon after being stocked.

Simple mate. The Government bodies and certain clubs to see eye to eye and have the same ultimate goal.

Oh aye. And a few million Euro.

Is this not just as case of the grass is greener .....

It seems the English lads all want to come here and fish the big Loughs for browns and the Irish lads want to go to england and fish the big ressies for bows

Is there really a need for one here ?? , I don't object to there being one ( as long as it is not Lough Sheelin )

Ah god no Stuart Sheelin can still be saved as a wild trout lough, soon as they stop dumping in those dam stockie browns.
I think Colin is right Lene would be a real cracker of a rainbow fishery. It already is a good one but with the right stocking ( no stockie browns ) and a little bit of forethought it could be a great one. I for one would have no problem paying a little more to fish Lene if it was getting stocked like a UK reservoir,in fact I'd say half the anglers in Ireland would Que up to fish it.The feeding and fly life is fantastic in Lene and it has already been proven that the bows do very well in it so it will just take a little broadening of minds to make it a real jewel.

Stuart bow your head and beg for forgiveness while eating a bar of soap,

speaking about putting rainbows into the holy grail of irish fishing,

unthinkable
