Default I witnessed an angler catch 30+ trout yesterday...

... at Hazel Copse.

Here's exactly how he did it:
He had a size 10 or 12 l/s cat's whisker with a strike indicator about 4 feet up the leader.
The fly seemed to be a pretty simplistic version - just fluoro lime green chenille body & a white marabou wing.
The chap cast out only about 10-12 feet and just let the lure hang a couple of feet off the bottom (I know where he was fishing was only about 5-6 feet deep) and almost without fail within 5-10 minutes another fish decided to grab hold.
Every time I glanced over the dude was in to another fish!
What annoyed some anglers was that after an hour or so he moved to another part of the lake & repeated the procedure.
He then switched lakes & again took about 10 fish in his last couple of hours fishing.

Anyone else seen or used this method with a lure to such good effect?

The guy doing it obviously enjoyed it or he would not have been doing it all day. I say live and let live with fishing, as long as what you are doing is within he rules and is not effecting anyone elses fishing whats the problem?

Indicators are not for me but i would not make this sort of comment about their use, each to their own.

That method of "fishing" is banned at Packington.

Roy, does that mean they have banned all indicators or just lure under the bung - must have ruined your season

What an innocent you are Steve, this can be an effective method very occasionally. A friend and I caught on blob under the bung at Farmoor 1 (and those are grown on fish, not stockies) when other methods resulted in follows but not takes.

Pretty strong opinion there Pete.

But was he really doing anyone else any harm?

I'm assuming that when you're bugging for grayling and get into a shoal, you stop after a couple and go home? Or do you see how many you can catch from the same shoal (and let's face it - it can be like shelling peas when you're on them).

It's not even as if the guy hogged the one spot so no one else could get a look-in. At least he move around a bit.

Fair play to him I say.

Cheers!

Graham

Charlie..just static Lures under a Bung..not indicators generally. A lot of the older members use sight indicators when buzzer fishing.

I have no real views on the subject where Stocked Fish are concerned..they are there to be caught.

Must tell you about my recent experiences with the Orange Blob sometime

This method is all to common now and I see it very often.Give the man some credit as he did move ,many dont and just stay at the same spot and transfixed looking for that slight twitch. We have to check the pulse on many of them just to make sure they are still breathing.
Its not a method I like at all and find it boring, but if someone enjoys it,im not going to spoil there pleasure as long as fish are safely handled/returned or killed ,no problem.many are lipped hook for those who are quick to the strike but some who have fallen asleep fish tend to take them deep down and in the honour of fishing ,would hope they are dispatched.
Catching 30 fish is not uncommon these days nor is the use of indicators,I dont like them or the way some are fished, but each to their own and not disturbing others ,or fishing illegally and have the hospitality and courtesy to move and dont require pulling out by a crane from the one spot,I will live with it and hope they will get bored eventually as it doesnt work all year round and other skills will have to be used some time.

I'm not knocking anyone, live and let live, I'm just giving my opinion, I'm entitled to that surely, in all my 75 years of fly fishing, I've never used a bung, indicator, or anything resembling them, it's the way I've been taught, I never use more than one fly at a time, but that is me, I am a Fly Fisher, we're a dying species, HALILULYA !!.....
