Question Vinegar

What is your opinion on using vinegar on a hand tied tapered leader and what way do you soften the leader. Please reply quick as I'm making leaders for a very impatient friend who wants them by tommorow morning.

Unless Ive missed something over the years I think all vinegar will do is degrease the line. As for softening it thats down to the material itself
that your using, the heat of the day may soften a stiff leader material to
some degree.Hope this helps a bit.

Yip, its all a pile of crock.
If its got memory the best thing you can do is give it a tug or whizz it over a boiling kettle.

I am certain that in a recent fly fishing magazine it say something about after tying your leader to place it in vinegar and hot water for three minutes as it does something to the line. Agree about the vinegar being good with the fish but want to know what it does to what you use to catch the fish.

Wait , consulted my magazine rack and I found it it was in the trout and salmon in the bit about french nymphing, page ten last column.

It is ****! i know cos i tried it

Bought the Diawa tapered leaders on the advice of a scottish rivers team member, followed his advice about boiling it in water and vinegar for 5 minutes, when you take it out and stretch it its fine but as soon as it cools down or is spooled the memory comes back, total waste of time and i used the last of my vinegar so had to have my chips without it gutted!

So dont waste your time, use decent mono/fluro and you shouldnt need to soften it, a good stretch should sort out any memory
