Default Fly fishermen - selfish and introspective?

Ok, a provocative message header, but deliberately so....

The recent massive fish kill on the Trent near Stoke has rightly prompted outcry in the coarse fishing world, full blown investigations and an on-line petition aimed at applying pressure to increase fines for such things (which are little more than an occupational hazard to polluters as things stand). As far as I can tell, the response on this forum has been muted to say the least (apologies if I have missed some stuff). After reading more in last week's Angling Times, and on one of my club websites near the affected areas, I posted a link on here to a petition which is running. Result so far? 193 views and responses from 4 people. Ironically, thats the same number of fish which they found alive in Scotch Brook (a Trent tributory near Stone) one of which, even more ironically, was a brown trout. In the main river, all fish were killed, with the exception of 2 brook lampreys. Latest EA update is here:
http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/news/111917.aspx

So this stunning lack of interest is down to what? the fact that its not a game fishing river perhaps? (or not that bit of it anyway, despite a few hardy brownies)

I really do hope I have got this all wrong and will be shot down in flames with a flood of replies to this thread saying how we must and are sticking together as anglers/conservationists etc.....

Hello and welcome sightbob

Relevant thread is just a bit lower down the page on this section:
Pollution fines petition

There have been a couple of other threads posted on here when the incident happened, but only attracted minor interest. If you hang around on here long enough, you'll note that, by contrast, tit for tat debates about lures vs imitative patterns, blobs, bungs and the like can run for pages and pages.... Saying that, don't be put off as there is loads of very useful stuff on here too and masses of experience, Terry C being a prime example (and yes, TC is one of the 4 who has taken an interest, well done once again that man, that's an extra pint or two for you next June!)

I have to agree with you jeff, not a whole lot of posts about the fish kill,
its the same here in ireland, our rivers from time to time suffer and fish kills are common and large amounts of both coarse and game fish die, but its forgot about in a day or two, its left up to the clubs to carry the can and sort it out,

Signed up, it's a 60 second job - the least I could do given my years as a coarse (but not rough!) fisherman..

You`re right, if this had been my local river, I`d probably have been organising the petition. Name added, albeit a bit late. Peter.

Default Petition

Jeff
You may find that many like me signed the petition but did not feel any particular need to post on the thread to confirm it

This pollution of the Trent was the cause of a significant number of people joining the Angling Trust, even those who had at one time expressed an opinion against the Trust.

Many of those who joined are all-round anglers.

The Trent also has a significant run of salmon these days.

Back to the subject of this thread.

Yes, a few fly fishers are selfish and introspective. One has only to look at certain other threads on this site to see that. But in the main, I am sure that the vast majority are not.
