Default float fishing

so, the debate that keeps cropping up is about indicators... in my eyes, seen in the same way as many others using an indicator is a form of float fishing.

I personally don't have a problem with float fishing with the fly rod, and I dont frown upon the use of them by others. I would be interested to know how others would judge float fishing, and how they had ended up at such a conclusion.

I beleive that those who frown upon float fishing are not as well educated about it as those that do use it.

J , I think that there are just so many forms of fishing out there for so many different species that you step into the world you want and the style that you feel happy with . Just because one man goes one way and another the other does not mean one is right and one is wrong .
I do not use a float but that is not to say I will not some time in the future if the need comes up .
I really do not care how people get their pleasure from fishing as long as it sits within the law ..............

..... and they are not causing a problem to me.

If these criteria are satisfied, people that give a sh1t should be thinking about their own fishing rather than worrying what the others are doing.

Are we supposed to be voting about our experiences of actual float fishing, or about using a floating indicator of some sort for fly fishing? Or do you mean using flies with a bubble float?

Indicators remind me of my coarse fishing past....for me they are a step too far in that direction.I just dont feel 'right' using an indicator when fly fishing so I dont use them.

I couldny give a monkeys if everyone else uses one.....that decision is up to the individual.

I regard it as a method of last resort.

Having said that, I was fishing a Sharpley Springs a couple of winters ago. It was very cold with a south westerly breeze.
I was fishing small buzzers with gold heads and missed a couple if takes which only just registered on the end of my fly line.

I attached a small strike indicator and after a couple of casts it stopped part way down the drift. Fish on. Subsequent casts resulted in 8 or 9 fish in about 1.5 hours plus a few missed or lost after setting the hook. The strike indicator never submerged. It either stopped or nudged up wind. No indication on the end of the fly line and nothing to feel.

For me they do have their place. Good for when fish are being finicky in cold weather.

I was fishing a floating fry recently (on the point) and had a nymph on the dropper. The floating fry was indicating takes when there was no twitch or pull on the fly line. I don't do it often, and I don't use those floating things you attach to the leader, just cause I don't fancy it much. So I've voted "no, but don't have much experience".

Glad you posted this poll though. Admittedly, I'm a recent addition to the forum, but I was surprised to find that some folk look down on those who use indicators, and that some folk look down on those who don't exclusively fish dry flies, and some folk look down on those who don't fish for tiny wild brown trout... etc etc. I'm quite happy for folk to fish for wild browns in remote little streams using only dry fly if that's what floats their boat (or any other variation - fish however you want) but to be honest, I didn't find the snobbish "my way is better than yours" attitudes very attractive at all. Not wanting to tar everybody with the same brush, of course, and I'm sure I'm just noticing those who's posts raised my eyebrow.
