Default Using Indicators, are we losing our skills as fly anglers?

It only really hit me today,a bit like a brick wall, after seeing some who regularly use indicators to catch fish and in numbers and dont use any other methods, but when they do,if they do,struggle to catch. The reason i believe is that they lose the skills they would have used before to catch because they are so now used to using an Indicator and have lost all confidence in other methods. Many believe they are good anglers by catching many fish using one, but take it away and shock would set in and realisation of what to do without one would show as, taking away a plane without a pilot.

When someone catches well using this method I dont look at it as good angling, as I would someone who has used skills of buzzers, nymphs wet drys or lures.Nothing skillfull in chucking out an indicator and sitting there waiting for a fish to grab whats under it,even worse a lure!!!!!
Im not against using indicators as they are a legal method and its down to choice,I can maybe have about 4 casts with one before im bored out of my skull with it and rather catch a couple rather than 40 using one.But thats my choice.Which is why I very, very rarely use one if at all.
But I do believe that skill as an angler are being lost becuase of them and it wouldnt be so bad if it were used as part of a days fishing as another method to catch,RATHER than the be all and end all of a days fishing.
I dont believe they should even have a part to play in competitions and glad to see in the main they are kept away from them,as if they do become part of it it will be a downward spiral of skills as fly anglers in my opinion.
Fine to use one, but dont make it the be all or end all of fly fishing and waste all other fly angling skills.

Default The Bung

Hi Kevin. The bung was itself born out of competition. Many years ago,I am sure it was the bristol compy boys that used a floating fry type fly as an Indicator. They cleaned up that year if my memory serves me right. Is there any differance how we catch stockies? I have seen anglers catching 30 rainbows on buzzers without the bung. Are they any more skillful?

Ive used indicators in the past whilst buzzer fishing, Ive been playing with them on the river aswell. I do prefer if buzzer fishing to use a dry like a sedgehog instead but if the fish are deep then its using a dropper up. On the river Im playing with the idea as I could alter the depth my nymphs are swimming under it easier rather than re-tying my cast. Again when on the river and fishing the trio I do prefer a klink as they do take their share of fish. As for the constant use then I agree its not skillfull especially when there is a blob on the end. again ive done that a couple of times when in a local fishery comp when all else has failed for me but its mind numbing and defo not my 1st choice.

I have to say Yes they are,as sitting staring at an indicator all day would bore the s...t out of me and it just seems like its all about a waiting game and if you hit a pod of fish away you go.
at least using a buzzer you have to work them and use a retrieve or find the depth a little, rather than go into a coma.

Ps I will say Im not against them just against losing skills and they shouldnt be the start and finish of a days angling.

back to Duck hunter.

Jimmy i totally agree with you. But on a small stillwater i don't think you need a lot of skill to tie on three buzzers, whack them out and let the wind take them round in a curve staring at the line ready to strike is any more skillful.

I'm the opposite i do better when not fishing an indicator,I have caught fish with them
but my catch rate has been better without, which is why, I don't use them very often.

Not true Brian, it takes a trained eye to spot the subtlest of takes on the flyline..... I'm talking about the really subtle visual takes here, not the ones that are felt.
The indicator shows up subtle takes like a sore thumb illuminated by twenty huge light bulbs.

I use a micro pimp when river nymphing, not to set depth but purely to make the behaviour of the line stand out more in broken water... i fail to see the difference between that and greasing up a minicon... but do consider it different as fishing static buzzers under a bung
