Hi', Bob.
Nobody wants to appear to be a wet blanket, but the right way to fly fish is to learn to cast first. I have taken numerous lads out to a nearby fishery for a first time try with a fly rod -- always their idea, never mine -- and while they have always been appreciative of my efforts, I think they would have a more enjoyable day if they had been able to cast first. Of course, it's not a bad idea to hook a fish and then let your mate play a trout for the first time, but it is infinitely more satisfying for them, and for yourself, to see them catch their own. Short, splashy casts, with crooked leaders on the water do occasionally produce a fish; but not often enough.
If your mate is a ball-player, he will have a sense of timing, if you can get him to cast far enough to cover a fish or two, fine, but a lesson in advance will possibly save him some embarrassment, and should certainly save him a fair bit of frustration. All the best. I really do know how you feel about this. TerryC
