Default Spent fish

I was fishing a small lake today for brown trout, doesn't close to 31 Oct.The lake is stocked a few times through the season by DCAL with takeable size brown trout. I caught a few and noticed that some of them were very black in colour especially their underside. Some also had a turned up bottom lip, quite ugly looking fish to say the least.I have never seen them before at any of these fisheries.Someone told me they were Spent fish.Has anyone any more info on these fish?

These fish are in spawning condition and should be returned.

That will most likely be the kipe starting to grow on the male fish as spawning season is on us shortly .
Rainbows also go black .

Appears they are not stocking with Triploids then.

A damn shame that is on the fish, shouldn't be allowed.

There are loads of places over here that do NOT use Triploids . A rainbow water I fish even uses "normal" fish . This was a big surprise to me when I first went there back in march and caught fish that were spilling roe and milt when landed .
I was used to catching in England where all the places DID use Trips .

Pirate is right -- mind you, that is very often the case. Catching gravid fish is a bit like racing a heavily pregnant mare, you wouldn't do it by choice.
Certainly no reflection upon you, tho. You are obviously concerned. TerryC

Can the fish breed in these lakes. The only stream/river out of the lake is blocked off with a grate. Also a lot of fish at time a jumping out of the water and slapping down again, I dont think they are feeding on anything at the time, someone said they were trying to shed lice, but I couldn't see any lice on them.

They might be able to breed if there is a spring coming in, over suitably sized gravel, thus mimicking the more typical, riparian spawning habitat.

And they are probably not trying to shed lice, unless they came in from the 'farm - your 'someone' was probably confusing them with fresh-run salmon?

Andy
