Default Airport Security

Anyone had any problems or experience of taking fly fishing flies through security in hand baggage? I am going to attempt to take some home tomorrow and do not really want to lose them. I only have hand baggage so will not be placing my bag in the hold. I already asked security last trip and they said it would be ok, but I wondered if anyone had actually done it.

will depend entirely on attitude of security at the airport!
took some into cuba in hand luggage through gatwick security, but couldnt take them back through in cuba!
same applied to a pair of rounded tip scissors in my first aid kit. got through edinburgh and gatwick security no problem, but had to leave them in cuba!
regards
bert

This has come up numerous times over the past couple of years, you could do a search if you want to read the whole threads.

Bottom line is that if/whether/what you'll be allowed to take on varies from airport to airport and from day to day.

If you're going to try to take gear on, I'd say bring whatever you need in the way of a bag, tube, or other protective case so that you have what you need to check the items as baggage when you're not allowed to bring them on.

Sorry Grouse,

I never thought to try a search for the subject. I am only taking a few I tied myself offshore, so I think I'll take a chance. I never check bags in as I have to rush at the other end to catch my train.

Looking forward to getting out again in a few days time!

Thanks for the replies.

Russell.

Hi Russell, I wouldn't worry too much, put them in an empty film cannister.
I tie quite a few flys when over in Spain, and haven't had a problem bringing them back.
I had a near do when I took an old Sunrise vise over to Spain to leave at the house for future tying.
I was asked to open my hand luggage at Liverpool.
I had put the table clamp in my suitcase, and the stem and jaws, in my wifes.
They looked at the clamp, and reluctantly said ok, but never looked at the rest, which to be honest looks far more sinister in a suitcase.
I also brought back three pairs of metal snips, that I found over there.
I wrapped them in tape to stop them cutting anything and they didn't give two hoots, but they took some cheese off my wife, as it cotains oil.
So apparently, you can stab airline staff, but you must not feed them.
It's all about how busy they are, and which side of bed they got out of.
S.

I got through ok. So now I know I can tie a few flies whilst away and get them home easily. I can't wait to get back out to the reservoir and have another go!

Many thanks for the replies!
