just depends which waters you fish mate.the wee stillwaters i fish ,the fish have started goin deeper the last few weeks.so its all about finding the depth for me(countdown method)until you hit them.failing that move about the water always looking for fish activity.it can be hard this time of year but with a wee bit of luck and loads of thought, and perseverence it will pay off eventually.
tight lines

I take it ur fishing stillwaters ? at this time of year as the YC says fish are a little deeper because of the cold, but like anytime of year fish can turn on to a certain type of fly, it pays to ask regulars what methods they are using and what flies they are presenting to the fish, i fished drumbowie recently with a pal we fished several lines and loads of flies for several hours before a regular told us to use a hothead damsel-first cast into a fish local knowledge is invaluble, hang on in there

Keep at it, try different tactics, ask other anglers whats working for them. Sometimes you have a run of not catching, then next time out you can do no wrong.

Dont give in, and dont be taken by the fact its colder now and the fish are supposed to be deeper ,infact alot of fish are still feeding off the top, it has been quite a warm few months with little rain and this time of year the fish feed themselves up for the leaner period coming, august and september were lousy months but the fishing is getting better, try the depths and different flies als different retrieves as that can make or break a days fishing but keep at ityou dont learn from catching all the time only when you dont

Hard times is the local council draining the waters that you have fished all season and emptying the trout downstream.
