Default Why you should post by recorded delivery

I recently sent someone a couple of Terenzio silk leaders by normal post.
I enclosed them in an A4 sheet then inside a normal envelope, which I taped around the seal with sellotape to prevent prying eyes (and fingers).
Well it turns out that it was opened up, and one was taken!!
Cost is not particularly high but not insignificant, but the fact that someone took the trouble to cut open the letter and steal one and reseal it really gets my goat.

Steve, sending by recorded delivery would make no difference as they go through the system the same way as a normal letter but need to be signed for at the other end. When a letter goes through a machine and the letter is a bit bulky, it can be damaged if caught in the machine or a bit sellotape if not sealed correctly could also get caught in the machine and damage or rip the letter. These machines can sort at a rate of about 30,000 letters a hour and if one gets caught everything behind it keeps pushing it and something has to give. You would be better putting it in a jiffy bag and it would be sorted as a packet.

fishay,
Thanks for the info, but the letter was no more thicker than a thick letter with many pages. A leader wrapped up in a coil is no more than 2mm thick.
The sellotape sealed the edges and wrapped around to the front of the envelope. I'd like to think it was due to a machine, but quite frankly more likely human intervention, it's not like this is a rare occurence - though granted not everyone who works in the industry is like this.
Cheers

I know the guy who organises fly swaps on another forum likes recorded because he lost a lot of flies to the postal system. Problem is it only takes a few bad apples to give all posties a bad name............just like a few anglers give us all a bad name.

How do you know that it was opened, a leader taken, and then re-sealed

How about, I put 2 in and there was only 1 in when it was opened by the recipient? It was gratis so no expectation of refund, etc, etc

Why recorded.
In our area we've been getting other peoples post through the letter boxes for years, we deliver as many letters as the post man

the answer from the post office is.......we'll look into it, ok but when

Recorded makes sence if the item is worth up to £39.00 after that Special Delivery is best cos it covers you for £2500.00 (But you have to tell the post office how much you want it insured for).

Most 4 piece trout rods can go special.

Ordinary post is not insured at all so its worth the extra cost.

I have only claimed once in 20 years and the post office were great even though it was £740.00.

How about, either you forgot to put two in, or, the recipient is telling porkies?

The only other scenario, and the one that you seem to favour is that a thieving postperson opened it up, decided they might just give fly fishing with silk leaders a try.... but just took one, then re-sealed it.
