Hi', Paul, and welcome to FFF.There are numerous Welsh lads on here regularly, and there are Welsh river threads going on, so lots of advice available, and most of it given in a friendly fashion. Fishing all your life? I am inclined to ask if you were born, literally, with a rod in your hand. Only kidding, enjoy the forums. TerryC

Thanks Terry, ( fishing all my life) just a figure of speach ( im 47).

I cant believe how dear top of the range fly rods are compered to rods in other disciplines.

Why are they so much dearer?

Damned if I know - if you're chasing trout in small rivers you can have an immense amount of fun with budget rods - if you want to spend a lot feel free, but you surely don't need to.

Hi mossie, welcome to the forums. Where abouts in North Wales are you? Were you planning on any form of fly fishing in particular? Possibly still water for rainbows to start with?

As for the price of the top of the range rods, well that's just a marketing ploy manufacturers use to keep tackle tarts happy.....oh yes it is......you know who you are!

Hi', Paul. I am your mirror image, age-wise -- 74, but not acting my age yet; and I hope I never do.
Expensive rods? Expensive cars? Big expensive houses? Very nice to look at, very nice, often but not always, to live with; but not absolutely necessary in order to enjoy life. I don't knock those who pay through the nose for a fishing-stick, then soil their trousers if you accidentally stray too close to one and bump it. One or two have had a 'fret' on here because they had scratched one -- imagine the agony, the mental torment, the trauma of having to accept that a £400 rod wasn't scratch-proof.
I am only joking. I looked at my 10ft 5wt Daiwa 3-piece the other day, while fishing dry fly on a local llyn, to you, tarn, to me, and wished that it had a finish on it to compare with the Scierra Pico V2 that I bought from 'Jingler' on the Forum during the summer. I shall have to re-varnish the whippings and the three sections, then give them a coat of matt finish. I don't like shiny rods.
Daiwa, Shakespeare, Grey's and a few others, give excellent value for your money. You can find loads of advice on here. A personal point would be to try before you buy, after finding a mate or two who will let you have a few casts with their rods to give you an idea what suits you.
BTW I used to have a week's holiday every year in the Dolgellau area, staying with friends, from 1994 to 2004, and enjoyed the experience. Even managed to climb Cader Idris, and had 5 little trout in Llyn Cau; but was stumped by the mullet in Broadwater, near Towyn. Cheers, TerryC.

i usually go to shell island in june and the rods are the first thing in the car! Eisteddfa is a nice little fishery near cricceth, or Gwernan lake is one of the most beautiful and peaceful places you could ever find yourself. Not too far from Cader Idris. On the cader road i think. There's also the usual suspects, Tal-y-llyn etc, but i much prefer finding the little unknown places in Wales, they're often the best. Oh and of coarse some nice stretches of rivers/streams up that way.
