Default cdc oil

Finally got my hands on some Marc Petitjean cdc oil.

Which is the best way to use it

treat the cdc during the tying process???

or treat drowned flies at the water????

I have some myself but don't use it on CDC flies. I use it like ordinary floatant but apply when I first tie the fly and let it dry in. I don't think it is supposed to be used on CDC feathers, that's the impression I got when reading about it.

WF is right. DO NOT USE anything on CDC. If a fly gets 'glugged' up, wash it in water and let it dry (or use Amadou to dry it). If you do use ant sort of floatant, it will negate the effect of the CDC.

Hiya 'Junky,

I would actually disagree with the above! I use the Veniards CDC oil and it does make a helluva difference to the floatability of the fly and enhances its drying once taken by a trout or two (so you can manage a couple of more fish on it than usual, before having to replace it).

Its true that other floatants 'gink up' the air spaces that give CDC its magical properties but the specific oils are purposely designed not to do so. All the same, use it sparingly to ensure maximum floatation.

Just my ha'penny's worth!

Andy

PS - I just add it bankside but guess that doing it at home would be better, after tying the fly! I think that most floatants need to be applied before the fly has gotten wet (in relation to your query about 'drowned flies')

When using CDC Oil only use very tiny amounts and work it through the CDC for best results.

It works a treat.
