Default Morton fishery pointers

Hi Guys

My other half has bought me a voucher for a days fishing at Morton fishery near Livingston . Not sure what she's after tho, could be costly!

Just wondered if anyone has been there recently who could let me know how it is fishing and any flies that have been doing the business.

Would it be best to try and book a boat or is the bank fishing good?

Thinking about booking my permit for Saturday. Not been out in a while so well looking forward to it. Hope the casting arm still works.

Thanks in advance.

Wullie

Hello wull welcome. I cant tell you about the fishing but the bank is 1st class for fishing off. someone on here at the start of the year said it was being restocked. ? I went up aprox two months ago on a sunday and it was closed. acording to a chap i met he wont open up for less than 5 fishers. he also said it was good fishing ? I used to fish it as a lad and the best spots IMHO were the sandy bay "round to the right from the hut" or right down the left side where the trees are all cut back opisite the hut. good luck let us know how you get on. Alan

Hi Scooby & muzza

Cheers for the reply I will post a message on how the day went. Is it easy enough to post photos on here? If I do catch then I would pop one or two on in the message.

Most recent report on forum that I could find was for end of August where it was Nomad lures and dry daddies that were catching.

Was going to wait closer to the weekend before I booked just to see what the weather was going to be like. Not that the weatherman gets it right too often eh?

Anyone else out there with info that might help would be appreciated.

Hi Wull,

I was at Morton maybe a month ago. There's plenty scope for bank fishing. The beach is pretty shallow at the bay (round to the right past the hut) so waders are pretty handy if you're fishing there. The bank in front of the hut has trees close by so I've never bank fished there. Have seen others do it though. I'm told there is a shelf dropping into deeper water just off that bank which the fish like.

The rest of the bank is a dam wall so nothing to hinder the casting, but all the same, I tend to take a boat when I go just to get access to the whole water.

I was fishing naturals and getting nowhere so eventually resorted to some traditional wet fly patterns. Ended up getting a couple on a fly that looked like a size 12 Zulu, but with a flou green tail. They were following it right up to the boat and taking it as I dabbled before re-casting. Other folk seemed to be doing a lot better than I was! Hope that helps a bit.

Hi All

Thanks again for the reply to my message.

Not much to report from my day's boat fishing at at Morton, Nice water but it was fishing really hard on the day. Nearly all fish taken were on the yellow dancer. Fish following right up to the side of the boat then turning away at the last minute.

I caught one rainbow at about 2lb that looked as if it had been in a scrap with a comorant it had scatch like marks down its sides and a chunk taken out of its back end about the size of a 20p piece. Not much of a fight when I hooked into it.

Mr Comorant was on the water all day.

The water was quiet, only three boats out the whole day. The guys who own it are brothers who have just taken over and are trying their best to establish a good reputation. Through conversation with George it seems that the intensions are good and that they really want to have a good go at it.

Hi Wullie, least you never blanked mate! I heard it had been taken over a while back but not heard too much since, think they could do with advertising a bit more, even posting updates on here would prob get them a few more customers. good to have another fishery in west lothian tho but it will take a fair bit of work to better bangour

Hi Muzza

Think what you are saying is right mate. Decent advertising would probably mean more customers and in turn more money would be made to plough into the fishery. In all fairness tho, the fish that I caught was fully finned and would have been a good catch if it was not for the comorant damage.

Do you fish at Bangour often? I stay about a 10mins drive away and have been a few times. I love the fact that you know the next pull on the line could be a monster trout! I have not managed to land one of Stevies big doubles yet (what about you?)
