Voted as Best Tool Kit? My guess would be ignorance ...

I too bought the set of tools when I first started tying - I didn't know any better and thought that the tools would be fine.

Like you, I soon realised that the tools were not as I hoped - not immediately because through ignorance, I thought that "that is what tools are like" -bobbin holders with inflexible arms, hackle pliers that are very stiff to open, scissors that blunt far too quickly, etc, etc.

But after trying out different makes of bobbin holders, scissors, etc. I soon realised that the Stonefly tools were certainly NOT the best.

All these years later, Stonefly still make the sets of tools, they still sell 1,000s of kits each year so I would suggest that if one of the mags held another poll, the stonefly tools would still rate highly.

Only this week did someone ask about the tool set on the forum - the question croops up fairly frequently - and I am guessing that for every one question asked on the forum, there must be a few dozen tiers who just go ahead and buy the set.

There must be literally 1,000s of "leisure" tiers out there that tie a few flies each week or so, that still use the stonefly tools, not realising that there are better options.

Only my opinion!

Kind regards

I think the kit that gets sent to people for testing and reviewing are better quality than the stuff put out for us mear peasants. There is also the advertising revinue etc, etc. The vote must only be undertaken by those in the trade and not by practicle peasants.
The other question is, how long do the reviewers test the products before going to print etc?

I bought the kit assuming the 'blue' parts were metal, and was really disappointed when it all turned out to be cheap and plastic. So I, like everyone esle I have spoken to, did the same as highlander, I threw it all away apart from the needle, and kept the box to store fly tying materials!

I have never rated the tools from stonefly at all for the reason as Darren says they are cheap and plastic and break easy. With all my tying tools ,they have to be decent and do the job well,Scissors being a major part and need to be sharp and fine pointed to get in near as close to the eye of the hook.

On the poitive side they do have some very good things like the stonefly zingers and ketchums which are stuck to your jacket with a very strong magnet and they are really good and the magnets are brilliant,no damage to jacket materials with pin holes to cause leaks later.Just a magnet. These I do use and are worth the money, but hard to get hold of distributers.
