Default Why the need for a rod license?

I can never understand why we need to buy a rod license,What is it for?,where does the money go?,How does it help me as an angler? Is it just another tax?

It does raise many questions and personally I think its just a rip off.Thankfully its only when you fish in england that you need one,but EA always keeps popping up around ROD License, what do they do for anglers? In Scotland we have SEPA but we dont pay them any rod license(Dont get any ideas those in sepa, who I know are members here)Would it not be better to pay to your representitive body who helps you as angler and looks out for your future angling.?

If this happened,it could then gain money to become a united organisation ,not dependant on any of the sport england, scotland etc and as a huge organisation representing millions of anglers would have more power and voice to be heard by goverment and thereforemonies would come anyway from these sports organisations as the UK organisation would be alot bigger and well represented than just being a splinter group of a few.

We pay car tax for driving on roads, why is it we spend millions making cycle paths and cyclists dont pay to use a bike.If every cyclist paid £5 per year how much revenue would be raised and help to pay for these paths and other monies put into places who need it like national health.Sorry if your a cyclist, but you do use them.

So why should I pay to carry a rod? When the goverment dont put any of it back into my sport.

Read on another forum that the EA are busy doing a telephone survey, One of the questions is would you renew next year if the price was £80 for salmon/seatrout so be prepared for an increase next season.

Another thread with people who are happy to slag the agency off without bothering to find out what they do.
Have a look here :-

I have met a few EA staff at various meetings and have beeen surprised at the dedication and amount of work they put in.
It's a shame they get lambasted by the same people they are trying to help.

i agree with you ,people wouldnt whinge about them if during the summer they came to there much loved trout/coarse fishery thats depleted of oxygen and they installed oxygenators to keep the fish alive...however i dont think kevins initial question is slagging them off just asking where the money goes well ive given one instance, but there will be them who wont answer the question correctly and as usual just slag them off ...

I don't see the point in having to pay this tax either - the EA do sweet FA as far as I can see, although they may, after a pollution, pump a little oxygen into the water

I've heard some anglers say they don't bother with one

I once talked to one of their guys who was taking water samples from the River Don at Oughtibridge, Sheffield. When I pointed out a possible source of pollution he just wasn't interested.

Not bothering with one could be very dodgy, having said that, I have only been asked for my license once in over 70 years of fishing, and that wasn't by an EA official, It was on one occaision when I booked in to fish a lake fishery, If these EA bailiffs did their job and checked up on license dodgers they could reduce the cost of a license considerably....

I don't think MorayFF was having a go at the EA staff.

I read is as why do anglers have to pay for a rod licence? Do other hobbies/sports have the same type of thing?
