Default Low water , plenty of salmon and seatrout

Was out on the river Wear this afternoon for a spot of grayling fishing .
Upon arrival i notice the river was down to its bare bones , gin clear and a lot of weed and algae around the river edges .
didnt manage any grayling but took some good browns out of the head of pools and all were safely returned .
lots of salmon and seatrout were jumping all afternoon mostly in slow glides below fast shallow water ...i'm not really clued up on salmon and seatrout but obviously they were waiting for some fresh water to get moving again .

my question is ...if they are waiting in their daytime lies , what are they doing jumping out of the water ? boredom ? or are they still on the move even in low water conditions ?

seen some really nice fish today , some over 5lb atleast .

Both will show through the daytime while holding in the pools and as a rule the salmon won't move off until there's some water in the river. Sea trout on the other hand will often run the river under the cover of darkness in low water.

Hi Sid, frustrating stuff to watch isn't it. ?
I used to fish for Salmon and Sea trout on the Cree at Minnigaff near Newton Stewart in the borders.
It was a private stretch owned by a friend of mine.
I sat in awe one day with my daughter, as we watched literally hundreds of fish, that's no exaggeration, holding up in a large pool waiting for rain.
They too were leaping out of the water, and I put it down to a lack of good oxygenated water, and perhaps some lice problem, as it hadn't rained for weeks and the pool was stuffed.
I fished it at night, and pulled sea trout flies, until my arms ached, but not a one took.
I honestly thought I would have foul hooked one eventually, as there were so many.

Not just that but its a fact that when air pressures change fish become more active , especially before the onset of rain ,

i remember watching salmon going loopy before rain came which brought a heavy flood onto the boyne ,
