Default Bat on the Dry

Has anyone ever had a bat on the Dry or a Kingfisher on a lure, Seen a TV program on the weekend (Trout n About) and two guys made out it happens all the time. Is there a close season on bats and do they have a fav. fly.

Allan,

There are several threads on here about catching bats. It seems to happen fairly frequently.

Never heard of a Kingfisher taking a lure though

I hit one with my rod tip last year at dusk. I had borrowed a Sage 0 weight to try out and thought I had snapped it! Poor thing landed in the river I carried it in my landing net, half a mile in the dusk to my car hoping it was just concused,However I discovered in the light i had snapped its wing through.
Being guilt ridden and squeemish I gently swadled it in cloth and gentle placed it under my rear wheel and reversed over it.
We had no rain for about 5 weeks and every time I turned up at that beat I was guilt tripped by the bloody cloth on the track.(why I didnt bin it? I dont know) Rearly soured my fishing at the end of last season.
Seen a duck caught on bread crust when i was a kid if that counts!

Cool Foul Hooked

I caught a pipstrell Bat on an olive midge pattern in August, although it was foul hooked through the leg, I took it to a local wildlife rescue place where they checked it over before releasing it, It is very odd watching your line swirl erraticaly about in the air after you had just carried out a what felt like a near perfect cast

Hi Guys, never caught winged creatures on a fly but to my embarrasment I caught a juvenile seagul on a dexter wedge spinner last year in Cornwall. It dived and took the lure and then took off and I had a seagul for a kite. Really weird winding him out of the air but luckily released him safe and sound. Doubt he will do that again.

I've not caught anything airborne before but I have made an overhead cast with a Salmon rod and watched a tiny parr attached to an Ally Shrimp sail past my head.

One night on Corrib a few season ago we were plagued by a type of tern taking our flies off the water in near darkness..Its a weird sensation when you feel a touch and the line pours threw your fingers into the air..
Also have had terns diving on rapalas just under the surface, aggressive litte buggers.
Bats are hooked often enough, had some close calls with swallows.

I think a Kingfisher is to shy to be close enough to a lure chucking angler
