I agree, I would always help another angler if I was approached. I have to say being 43 now, I can look back to the days when a couple of mates and I used to fish Grafham, during the course close season, and we must have been real 'numpties' i guess, but everyone, and I mean everyone helped us out. We were then early 20's, I suppose typical lad types, but the fly anglers were all gents.
I can remember having some fantastic conversations with fly anglers, help was very forthcoming. One chap, Bob Worts, I remember his name, had a huge beard, and I stood watching him casting and stripping flies for ages, he was a mighty helpfull chap.
Some of the old Grafham boys, were obviously into the competitions, and consequently a bit more reserved, but I would have to say, nearly all the fly guys we met would have been gtreat to share a boat with.
ONly this year, my other half and I were at Grafham, and we struck up conversation one evening with a nice guy, turned out to be an England fisher, with his England Cap, gave me his card and asked if I'd like to do a boat day with him?
I think its all because, in course fishing, the fish go back, get harder to catch and peeps are wary of what information to give away, Trouts generally get bumped on the head, so there is little need for a competetive edge.
That, and I genuinly believe that Game anglers are a 'Higher Class Species'!
