Default Tuition

Having been fly fishing for nearly a year, I think I've mastered the basics but I feel I have so much more to learn. I've been fishing mostly small stillwaters up til now to get experience.

I know I need to improve my casting (both distance and accuracy) but there are many areas in which I need to improve.

For instance- reading the water for likely holding spots, matching the hatch, when to use wets/dries/nymphs/lures, retrieval methods, different tactics to adopt - all of these will come through experience, reading magazines and by going onto the forums.

The question I need to ask is whether it is worthwhile paying for tuition for all the above? I would gladly pay for casting tuition but does anyone know where I could get professional help (and not just from the psychiatrist !!) to help me improve my all round angling?

I seen that Wellsfield trout fishery do 2hr lessons for £50, I tried twice to arrange it with them and left contact numbers but no one got back to me. I'd be willing to travel to anywhere in Glasgow/Lanarkshire/Lothians/Central if anyone can point me in the right direction. Cheers.

If you can manage it I would recommend a weeks course at Malham Tarn. The course is for beginners and improvers it covers casting instruction, bank fishing, boat fishing and river fishing. Lectures in the evening introduce you to fly tying, entomology, reading rivers and leader make up etc.
The course is run buy Stephen Cheetham (SteveC on this forum) go to www.fishingwithstyle.co.uk

Contact Swanswater Fishery in Stirling ( 01786 814805 ). Lessons can be arranged at the fishery.
You could also come along to the casting club in Knightswood Pond. We meet Sunday mornings 9.30 - 12.00. Alberto can always instruct or point you in right direction. Only costs £1.00 per visit

Check out www.allandaletarn.com . At the home page click on Fly fishing coaching. Paul has been teaching here for many years. He teaches on both a one to one basis or we also run group evening course throughout the year as well as weekend short courses for more specifics. Paul is coaching groups here this weekend both Saturday & Sunday if you fancy popping out to have a wee bleather with him yourself, or feel free to call him on: (01506) 414616 in the evenings to chat about what you are looking for! Hope this is of use to you!..
Tight lines!

Andrew toft i wouldn't hesitate to recommend, he really is world class! I personally found his instruction brilliant in fixing a awful tailing loop i had stuck in my casting earlier in the year, the progress since then has been amazing. He is probably the highest qualified instructor you'll find!

Look up www.aapgai.co.uk to get his contact details.

The guys at the casting club would really help you too.

If you can come to the GAC on Sunday I will have a look at your casting. Just introduce yourself.I should be around the casting pool most of the day. After that you can find me at Lawfield and Howwood Trout fisheries where I have been teaching for the last 10 years.
