Mikeab
I use them all the time, since i was given one some 5 years ago when i started fluff chucking, i cant stand tapered leaders and dont like making my own tapered ones , too many knots for my liking. ive just started furling my own, and apart from the butt knot and tippet ring its pretty easy i must admit they are an aquired taste you either love um or hate um, i think you know were i stand they do give a nice turnover and presentation if you get your tippet lenth right, ive used upto 15ft but thats pushing it abit, about 10ft tippet is good.Rod3 , i think hes called that now? sells his through spiderplus.co.uk, his was the first i used and its still going strong nowThey can be made from alsorts off materials , mono, flouro, thread ect sinking ,floating camos and so forth.Well worth getting one to try out to see if it suits youGaz

I seem to use one for all my river trout and grayling fishing and have done so for at least ten years .
Rods from Spiderplus are the ones I use , they do present a fly with delicacy and allow accurate positioning of your flys !

I've used furled from Phoenix and silk from Terenzio.. I like both.

They need a little time to get used to. On a bad cast they will spank the water with a thwock and a tangle, on a good one they'll help the average caster look like a pro.. They really help with accuracy too.

I use short tippets - between 4' and 8'. I don't see much point in using them with a tippet longer than a rod length: you could just stick a long tippet on the end of the line without a leader..

They hardly cost the earth, so get one and have a play!

Mar,alade, if using a 4 or 5wt line on small/medium rivers, casting size 16/18 flies, what type of tippet do u use ?

Cheers

Do you know what? No idea! I went into a shop and asked for something for trout in chalkstreams!

So I just got the stuff out of my bag to check.. Greylon, 6X .12mm. That doesn't mean a huge amount to me.

I do find it doesn't take much use go get this material kinked and misshapen, but sticking a new tippet on is hardly a struggle. I also find that some of my knots inexplicably disintegrate.

I use a 5 weight Terenzio artificial silk line. I'm still coming to terms with the set up: the other day I cast like a God to a few roach under a branch and up to another branch with twigs at about 10 yards, from a wooded part of the bank.

I nearly stopped fishing for the day, such was my pleasure.

Further upstream I dumped about 6 yards of line straight on top of a grayling about 4 yards away and spent ten minutes trying to un-knot everything. That was standard unpressured overhead casting.

Sigh.

Your query does bring up a back-of-the-mind ho-hum thought: do we need leaders at all (particularly when the end of a silk line is quite fine anyway)?

Next season I'm going to try putting about 6' of tippet straight onto the flyline, and do away with the leader altogether.

I'll keep my casting tight - three rod-lengths at most should give me accuracy and the chance to mend the line in tricky currents.

I'm also going to try the same, but with a gang of three for grayling later on in the year.

I've been using these furled leaders http://www.fallrun.com/page/page.cfm/Furled for my short rod, stream fishing. Delivery quick, and good value. They turnover great, and greased up make an excellent indicator when nymphing. Blacken them with an indelible pen, aprt from the last inch or so. The yellow tip that left is your nymph fishing indicator.
I would also argue that you can get good turnover with no flyline out of the rod ring. Ideal on the small streams.

Good point.. My line will follow the leader through the rings, so I can cast with only a couple of feet out of the top.
