Default Rainbow Colours

Quick newbie question, I caught these last weekend, just wondering why one of them is so much bluer in colour than the others? Is it a different species, or just indicative of something else?

I caught them at Barn Elms by the way.

Cheers.

Hard to tell from the picture but you might have had a Blue trout. Basically an rainbow with a gene abnormality which causes it to become blue in colour. The same type of abnormality also gives rise to golden trout.

Blues and Goldies are often stocked. With the blues more than the goldens due to their exceptional fighting qualities.

Not sure about that one in the pic though, doesn't look like a blue to me. Looks almost bone shaped, with a distinct pinkish colour.

HI', John, it's a blue. A product of breeding experiment I understand. They are very popular, much more so than golden rainbows. TerryC
PS I should say that it looks like a blue, and would be more positive if its back was darker. I've had blues up to about 5lb, but I can't say that I've had a lot in my part of the world. Stuart will no doubt know more about them than I do.

Hi Johnyboy,
You will find as time goes on the vast differences in Rainbow Trout.
they can appear bluish, greenish, brownish,on the back, even badly wintered fish that
appear grey/black[not so common now].I dont think its a blue you caught. You will know
if you get one.Enjoy your fishing mate, there is alot of people out there that will
help with info.WATCH,LISTEN,READ. [Todays toprod is tomorrows woodenspooner]
Fishing is a great leveller.

Thanks for all the replies, as they were stocked fish, I had just assumed that they'd all look pretty much identical. I've caught 10 from barn elms over the past few months and that one is the first that was coloured differently, as well as being a bit larger (3.5lbs vs 2-2.5lbs for the others). I'll just have to keep going and try to catch some more colours.

Cheers. J

Yes, i agree. A blue also has the giveaway blue in the eye. I've had blues that are bright silver in colour, but the blue in the eye gives the fish away. some blues can 'revert' to more normal rainbow colours in time, but i think that's a normal rainbow thats been in a bit..
