I'm just in the middle of making a list of gear needed and i'm presuming if i'm to be fishing the Nidd and some stillwater venues (boat and bank) i'll probably need 2 rods? If so, how short/weight/flex etc should i go for the river and how long/weight etc for stillwater? I would prefer to get it right 1st time rather than my normal dive in too soon and realize i've bought the wrong gear.

Thanks again
to do that properly you will have to go and try the rods to get it right first time ?? buying blind you may not get the rod that suits you or your casting ...

i can try to advise you on the river and one of the forums stillwater anglers can advise you far better than me on the res. For the Nidd seeing that it is mainly treelined a 8ft to 8ft 6" 3 or 4 wt rod with equivalent large arbor reel, i wont say what flex as i believe that is a personal choice(a seperate thread on its own) 9ft big butt leader with tippet of 2.5 to 3.5lb length (i use nylon as opposed to flouro or copolymer again a personal choice) dependant on number of droppers. Hope this is of some use.

If you get on the Nidd, The fladen vantage 7ft 3 wght would be a great way to start , Subscribe to fly fishing and fly tying and pair the free Greys reel with it and buy a decent fly line..

The fladen is amazing value and will let yu get started and give you a chance to assess what rod you want to spend some more serious cash on....

Would something like this Greys combo fit the bill at £100. Maybe the 8ft6 or 9ft?
Could i get away with only buying 1 rod for both still and river (Nidd) at least for the time being?

Hi Nuby, as a member of two of the clubs mentioned in the thread, I am happy to share my experiences of my first year. Before my Pickering membership came through I had joined Nidderdale Anglers, I love fishing the area up at the top, ie Wath, as the hills etc are lovely. The fishing is nothing serious, I found spiders or slim nymphs fished up or down were great until June when dries became superior fish catchers, especially Klink and Dink. I also fished further down around Summerbridge at the back of the industrial estate ! and caught my first ever grayling, a decent fish of about a pound.

Ilove the Nidd but I think a lot of bait fishing gets done on the upper stretches, to the detriment of the fly, but fly does account for the better fish.

Sadly, my PFA card arrived, I now fish the beck at Pickering, the fish are huge and it is much nearer to York where I live, equally PFA have the arrangement with HFF and next year I will try out their water on the Nidd.

I bought a Chas Burns 6ft rod for fishing the Nidd as up at Wath anything near 81/2ft is a handicapp as I found out. For certain parts of the beck in Pickering a bigger rod is an advantage, but a 11/2lb brown trout on the 6ft is great fun. I cannot recommend Chas`s rods enough and although over budget, buying one good rod for one thing is best. Try a day ticket for the Nidd, it may help you decide.

Starting at the head of the river you have Nidderdale Anglers (http://www.nidderdaleac.co.uk/) who have most of the water down to Low Laithes and also Scar House reservoir. You therefore get stillwater fishing as well as river fishing. Course fishing is allowed on certain sretches and they have quite a few 'holiday anglers' during the caravan season. Certainly within your budget.

Harrogate Fly Fishers (http://www.harrogateflyfishers.co.uk/) have the next three miles down from Dacre to between Darley and Birstwith. Pretigious club, well stocked, I think membership is around £220 + joining fee.

Locals in the 'Birstwith Anglers' then have the River down to Hampswaite Bridge.

From Hampswaite Bridge to Killinghall Bridge 'Knaresborough Anglers' (my club) have the fishing plus also a trout lake just outside Knareborough and another small section of the Nidd near Wetherby. Again, you get the benefit of stillwater as well as river fishing. The river and lake are both well stocked and managed Fees similar to Harrogate Flyfishers. The Nidd starts to become more of a mixed fishery after that point.

Fewston and Swinsty are both good day ticket waters if stillwater is your main thing.

Drop me a pm and I'll arrange for you to visit the Knaresborough Anglers stretch if you like.

Regards
Nidd
Nidd i sent u a PM but have just realized i don't have enough posts in order to PM anyone lol.
KA sounds the ticket. Could you advise where would be best for me to go down for a look. Is there good access along the whole stretch? Also, if you could confirm details of who i should contact re joining.

On the tackle front i've got myself a 9'6" 7/8 grxi rod/reel combo and will use that for still water. I'm putting a 7'6" 4/5 on my xmas list so will see what santa brings if i'm a good boy. I wouldn't be joining a club until Jan anyway.

Thanks again everyone for the advice.
