Default Best and Worst

As we reflect on the season in the last few weeks remaining, what was the best and the worst for you?
Best thing for me was acquiring a 3 weight rod for my birthday in April. This has got me closer to what I remember of my first fly rod as a snotty nose kid of about 14, which was as cheap as you could get then and was split cane which flexed from butt to tip making even a six inch grayling feel like a monster. The new rod is a bit more refined, but has a lovely touch and copes well except when in a strong wind and has given me a lot of pleasure. Light as a feather.
Also up there, a few weeks ago I had a classic day when I caught wherever I dropped in. Dries, upstream nymph, N.C. Spider all worked. I fished down a stretch about a hundred yards long and past a barbel fisher who i thought was packing up. He wasn't, he was just moving, but he was a gentleman and waited patiently as I edged downstream fishing a team of spiders and picking up fish as I went. It was a great pleasure to get my first double hook up on a river. A nice trout of just over a pound on the point and a smaller grayling on the top dropper. Fantastic stuff.
Worst thing this season? Well that's the best of it because I didn't really have a worst. ATB Alan.

Best bit for me was catching 4 salmon in a day and being part of the England youth team that won in wales. I didn't really have a worst bit but breaking my rod was probably the worst.

Best part has to be Lough Corrib. Fished it a hell of a lot this year with Basil Shields and I don't think I will ever learn as much as I did this year, to be honest I don't think my brain could take it.

The worst part has to be the passing of Rod Tye. A true master and excellent teacher.

Best has to be catching my first good Grayling on a dry while fishing the Eden, again for the first time and the general improvement I've made this year in general.

Worst would probably be a few blanks but nothing really to speak of.

Default Salmon On!!!

Best for me was hearing a faint whistle blast from Hugh my boy,He was into a fish on upper Bigaweir.Sadly the worst was it had come of by the time I had puffed along the bank bearing the net with which he might have landed the fish with.
Really pleased for him as the fish came from somewhere I would not have bothered with ,and he had made the right move to get it all on his own ,sadly his lack of fish landing experience had not prepared him to think about beaching spots or taking the net .
Better buy him his own gye net for Christmas!

Best for me was probably me introduction to float tube fishing > its a different world and one that comes highly recommended.
worst point was probably buying my first annual salmon licence for €130 approx and not going salmon angling once. Ashamedly.

Best part of this season for me (this being my first as a fly fisherman) was
my first Trout of one and a half pounds caught on Long Loch up on Dunnet
Head. June the 5TH 3.45 pm never forget it, I had been having takes all season fishing St Johns Loch, Easter Loch, Long Loch, even the occasional
trip down to Loch Brora, but could never land one. Iwas begining to think I was doing something wrong until my first catch. I was just about to leave when I thought I would give it another ten minutes, and decided to put on
a black Zulu on a slow sinking Leader (not got the hang of fishing teams just
yet) when wallop the line tightend and I was in I was trying to remember.
keep the rod high and the line tight after about five minutes of thinking ,this
better not get off it was in the net, Duck Broken. I,ve had in total 7 brownies
this season so far non being as big as the first, but what it has given me is the beleif that I ca,nt be doing much wrong, and the enthusiasum to carry
on and develop and improve my fishing.

Tight Lines

Steve.......
