Default Fry Bashing Time

It's now time on many still waters where those big grown-on brown and rainbow trout can be targeting as they plough into the quantities of fry making them shower into the air, creating exciting bow waves and vortices in the water.

It's started to happen on my water, and with a number of large browns and blues in it, I can see some exciting fishing coming up during the next 2 months.

But are you ready for it?

I was out with my friend Shane Calton yesterday who introduced me to a range of sparkler flies which will certainly match the small rudd "hatch" on the water I am fishing. I find that imitating small fish is just as facinating as imitating insects. After all it's all about matching the hatch, isn't it?

It certainly is about matching the "hatch" Ron and, though I much prefer to fish dry fly, a good fly-fisherman will avail himself of the opportunity of catching some larger fish on fry patterns. I'm already "geared-up" with some choice patterns and eagerly awaiting the challenge - bring it on.

Appetizer , Alexandra , Teal blue and silver , Minkies to name but a few that have done well for me so far . I have also done well with a sooty olive dabbler with a pearly body . I think they take this as a perch because perch are a sooty olive colour and the pearly body gives the fly "fish sparkle"

If you see a fish crash and so stun some fry and you can cover it fast just cast the fly/flies into the ring and straighten line but do NOT pull your flies and the trout will be coming back for stunned fish that will not be moving . Get ready and hold on tight as when they feel the tension in the line and you lift they are of like express trains It is a great way to catch and I have had a lot of success in the last few weeks with this method .

PS:anyone fishing the comp on Sheelin on oct 3rd please ignore the above as it is a rubbish method and you will not catch big fish that way ( cough cough )

Basically through September, October and later. A lot of reservoirs close at the end of October and I feel because of this we often miss the best of the fry bashing fish.

There are numbers of huge brown trout in many British waters that will die of old age long before they are caught by anglers. I saw a brown trout in my lake about 3 weeks ago that was every bit of 12 pounds, it could even have been bigger.

I've just tied a dawsons zonker, which i'm going to try, always had good success with the zonker and the dawsons olive at this time of year, so i thought i would combine them t see what the results are.

Old pattern that one . Remember using them when I was a kid fishing for rainbows with my father .

For some odd reason pink is a very good colour for that pattern

Another old one was the polystickle , do people still use that ???

The polystickle was designed by Dick Walker to suggest a Stickleback. There were millions of them in Grafham in the early days, but I understand you don't see them today.

I have never caught a fish in my life on a polystickle.

This fly has gone right out of favour, unlike a few of Walker's patterns such as the great red sedge and the mayfly nymph which never will go out of fashion. They still catch too many fish.
