Default Seal problems

We the Management of the the River Dovey,a prominent sea trout/salmon fishery in mid wales are having problems with seals entering the river (up to 4 miles up stream when the river is in spate) .At its worst there are three seals in the river system which are ruining fishing on the lower and middle beats.Have any other fisheries had similar problems and if so how was the problem dealt with ?

Williams,

I'd love to know the answer to your problem.

There are a small local population of seals in the Solent and Southampton Water areas, and which we sometimes see well up into the estuaries (ie Test, Itchen, Hamble).

As a fisherman, all I have ever done is pack-up my tackle, take-out my pipe, and sit and watch them doing a masterful job of catching fish and playing, as I have found that it's just not possible to compete with their sheer efficiency at catching fish.

Easiest way to deal with the problem is to have a shift in Victorian attitudes and actually realise that the seals have as much, if not more, right to be catching fish than the anglers. There you go, problem solved.

I don't expect that solution to be universally accepted, however.

4 miles and you think thats a problem , we had seals in the ure above boroughbridge n.yorks, which by road from hull (where the seals can only enter the system) is approx 75miles so add maybe another 10/20 miles because of twisting river and your talking nearly 100 miles upstream, not only that the bloody things have negotiated 3 sets of waterfalls

My mother in law saw one a couple of years ago while she was out walking the dog in Rawcliffe!

A .22 is not powerful enough to take out a seal.

Certainly in Scotland you have to apply for a license and then it is added to your firearms certificate. I seem to remember you have to attend a course on seal recognition, telling the difference between a common and a grey seal, safe shots etc.

Seals enterinf fresh water have a different status than seals in the sea, "rogue seals" springs to mind.

Try a google search.
