Default How many is enough ?

There is a thread running at the moment in which the owner of a loch is reporting the only three anglers on his water caught 91 fish between them through the day on dry flies with dozens more lost . He congratulates them on `superb angling` (questionable). My question is this, if you were one of these anglers that ended up with say 30 fish each at the end of the day, at what point in the proceedings would you have stopped fishing or would you have gone on to amass a similar tally.
All the best,
Andy.

Interesting Andy.

My view: every fishery will have its share of regulars who feel it is important to return large numbers of fish every visit. Days when the fish are crawling up the line are all too rare, but don't you find when such days do come along, that eventually returning a procession of half tame stock fish becomes, well boring?

I can't blame anyone for wanting to 'fill their boots', but bragging about it to anyone who's prepared to listen, as if the feat took an immense quota of skill? Well that's just sad in my opinion.

91 is enough for one day.....

and whats questionable about good angling skills ??? they are well known at every fishery in the central belt and very highly regarded anglers and fly tyers.

---------- Post added at 09:45 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:41 PM ----------

i will add that is was very sunny and a flat calm, tough conditions to say the least i was amazed at this number of fish and this is why i published it.

Another well known scottish internationalist had a huge return on harelaw a few weeks ago and it was kept quiet because everyone else really struggled and we thought a few noses would be out of joint..

Hello Finnick, firstly good luck to the lads they,ve obviously enjojed a great days fishing, whether its your idea of a good days fishing or not.

Secondly when i go fishing its from the earliest possible time in the morning until the latest time in the evening, at least 9 hours.

I,ll be fishing constantly all day, whether im catching or not. If i was catching there would be no point in THE PROCEEDINGS at which i would stop fishing.
I absolutely love fly fishing and catching fish so WHY would i want to stop catching fish.
That the point of go fishing, its not everybodies view but we,re all individuals just trying to enjoy our sport.

Why is it other fly fishing members try and drive a wedge between reservoir, stillwater and river angling.
Not many anglers have access or financial backing to pursue all three so everybodies must make do with all thats available to themselves.
Its all FLY FISHING in the end. ck

Hi canada kid.
I`m not sure where you get the idea from my post that I am trying to drive a wedge between river, loch and reservoir anglers ? Perhaps you could read my post again. I am implying no criticism of Alex, Snypes Dam or the stocking policy there but am simply asking when is enough enough. There must be an ethics angle here. If I was one of only three anglers on the water and started to catch immediately, as were my two companions and kept catching as these guys obviously were I can say hand on heart that I would have stopped fishing after 4 or 5 fish. Where is the challenge in catching with the fish feeding like that ? It would become boring to me.
There was a theory that anglers went through four phases in thier fishing lives canada kid, firstly you want to catch a fish, any fish. Secondly you want to catch as many fish as possible. Thirdly you want to catch the biggest fish and finally you want to catch the fish that represent the greatest challenge to you regardless of size. What stage, given your post do you think you are at. By the way, the motto of the Flyfishers club is`there is more to fishing than catching fish`
All the best,
Andy.

This very subject surfaces here every few months and there are countless threads on it, I will catch the fish in front of me if I can, I am not a great believer in the mentallity of stopping fishing because I am catching! I pay my money and if I blank, well I blank if I catch 30 fish then well done me, it will probably be a year or so before I have another day as good.

I guess it comes back to what you go fishing for. There was a time when numbers ruled for me, but not any more. Also less so when I'm trout fishing than when I'm coarse fishing.

Out of curiosity, was the 91 between 3 evenly split, ie did they all call a halt at 30 each, or did they just stop at the same time and someone had got 40 or 50, or did they carry on bagging til home time and 91 was just the final tally? If it was such a lovely day I think I'd have just had a kip in the sun after a while
