Default First take on fourth trip

I went fishing at Powdermill Reservoir all day yesterday for my fourth fly fishing attempt. I had a new line from PP and some flies that I had attempted to tie myself as well as some purchased ones. I actually began to cast remarkably well and got the line out a good distance thanks to the line. I tried all sorts of flies and think I got a fish to nip a woolly ****** that I had made, but was not sure, it may have caught on the bottom. There was a lot of wind making things a little difficult. Anyway as it was becoming darkish I was using a homemade F fly and placing it all around the area. Suddenly a fish jumped out and grabbed it!
I hooked it and began to reel it in. I got it about halfway in and then it slipped off the hook! The fly was still attached. What a feeling though!! No more takes after that, as I could not see 15 minutes later. My Missus was quick to point out that I still hadn't caught anything! But after four excursions with nothing, it was wonderful. I can't wait to go again and am going to tie some more flies. I need to try and sort out my kit though as I seem to be carrying too much gear.

You are nearly there! It's just a matter of time. An F-Fly is a very small fly, with a very small hook. It's not unusual for a fish to shake the hook, even a size 8. I'd be tempted to tie on something bigger, like a Daddy, a Sedge, or a foam beetle. You'll see it better, and so will the trout. Keep the pressure on as much as possible without snapping your line. It won't be long before you land one.

Good luck,

SharkeyP (I was were you are a year ago)
