Hi J

Find out what they are eating and match it. You should crack it then !

Welcome J, try a Pheasant tail nymph, fished upstream.

With a gold head, underneath a klink!!

You could try a large - ish fly - fished dry in the riffles or close-in-to-the-bank up-stream, be prepared to strike quickly; those wild fish are extremely fast! best time to fish : Early Morning or in the Evening, keep your casting to a minimum and a great deal of stealth is required; you need to sneak up on them! The wild fish spook easily!

Hi StrikerJ,

I would guess that it's probably a where you are fishing and your approach rather than choice of fly that's preventing you catching.

Try and concentrate on the faster shallower water, fish upstream, keep low when approaching the stream, use the longest leader you can manage, try and keep the flyline off the water if you can (at least keep it away from where you think the fish are), use a bushy dry with good floatability that you can see well on the water (if the waters fast enough the trout won't mind too much what it looks like) keep casting to a minimum and if you don't get a take in the first 6 casts then concede that you've spooked the fish and move up stream to the next likely spot don't flog the same water all day.

Remember to try and show one fly to every fish in the river rather than showing one fish every fly in your box, your first cast is always your best chance.

Good luck and persistance will pay off.

Michael
