Default So let's be honest now......

How far can you cast with a single handed fly rod?

And I mean measured accurately from the butt of your rod to the end of the leader.

I'll start the ball rolling:

Using a 7 weight rated Greys 9 1/2 foot Gtec rod with a #8, 30 foot clear intermediate shooting head backed to braided backing with a 9 foot tapered leader I can cast 39 yards 4 inches with the double haul style utilising 3 false casts.

I can't do this all day.

Now with a full line:

Using an Airflo WF7F with the same rod, casting technique and a 9 foot tapered leader I can cast 31 yards 6 inches. With a 20 foot leader, considerably less than this, maybe 25 yards at the most.

When I was in my 30s and 40s, I could cast much further than the figures mentioned, my reactions are not as sharp these days. For instance using a #10 shooting head in the days when I did a bit of saltwater fishing I could get over 45 yards.

But what can you do, honestly?

I used to be able to, with a lot of thought, effort and double hauling get to the backing in the eyes.
I can't remember what line this was, may have been a shorter one lol.

I cant do that anymore, more importantly, I dont really try either.

With an Angel2 I can get the backing of a loop 7# to the tip eye, occasionally..............usually to the butt eye.

Not sure how far that is, but nearly a full line, all be it with a bit of over the shoulder wind assistance, of about 20mph, gusting 40 mph

I can get over 100m but then I am casting a 20 weight WF line with a plankton fly when fishing for blue whales!!!

Ron, are you talking about casting with a team of flies or a simple leader, sans flies?

Ben

As far as I have to, any farther than that and I don't bother. Some days it is farther than others especially with a tail wind. On a good day that can be a full WF7 line with 15' of cast on the end.

I can, on a good day, get the whole line out. (backing at the butt ring) but in all seriousness i never really do it. I'm much more into accuracy at mid range and being able to lift a long line and punch it to a moving fish quicklywithout false casting too much.

No matter how far I cast I'm usually 5 yards short of where the biggest fish are rising
