Default How to fish the F-fly?

Hi.
I'm thinking about tying some of these up in 12's & 14's á la the Gathercole dressings in the Bible.

How exactly do you fish them on stillwaters?

Would you sink the last few feet of tippet with mud & spray with the fly with floatant, or does the CDC wing/water-resistant polypropalene body dubbing material really not ever need this?

As an aside, I sink-tested a CDC winged sedge I made & am very impressed with the water-resistant qualities of the feathers I got. Even after saturation & then attempting to 'squeeze' water into the feather with my fingertips the thing seemed to float ok.

Any thoughts?

I'd always sink the last couple of feet of the leader when fishing any surface fly and would not treat the CDC with floatant, a few false casts is enough to dry it out and make it float.
